Hi, my name is Justin, and I live near Lisbon, Portugal.

I Have several interests, one of them are DOGS…

Among them I love one in special, the German Sheperdog

See more information (in Portuguese only) Pastor Alemão

If you prefer other dogs you can always see this very insteresting site www.petrix.com/dogint/ who just classifies them by intelligence, see there if your dog (or favorite dog) is considered intelligent, or less intelligent than a pig...

Just to inform you that my German Sheperd dog is classified in third place on that list !

You can also teach some tips that can work with your dog

- German Shepherd Dog -

Breed of working dog, which originated in northern Europe several centuries ago.

The dogs were originally used to protect flocks of sheep and are still used for this purpose. More recently they have been trained to aid police forces in capturing criminals and to guide the blind—hence the designations "police dog" and "Seeing Eye dog." German shepherds are also used as guard dogs by the military.

The dog is more than medium size, standing 61 to 66 cm (24 to 26 in) high at the shoulder. It has a long, muscular body and gives an impression of power and ruggedness. The dog has a long head; a wedge-shaped muzzle; dark-brown eyes of medium size placed somewhat obliquely; medium-sized ears, set high; short, compact feet with hard pads and dark nails; and a bushy tail. The dog has a double coat, consisting of an outer coat with straight hairs of medium length and a thick woolly undercoat. The color may be any of many varieties between light gray and jet black; the main colors are brindle, black and tan, tan, brown, and black.

The German shepherd is noted for loyalty, intelligence, and courage.

SOME TIPS FOR YOUR DOG:

SIT

COME HERE

- SIT -

You can teach your dog to sit while he is by your side, facing you, or while you are walking him on a leash.

While you are saying "Sit", pull up gently on the leash and use your hand to gently push his bottom down into the sit position.

As soon as your dog is in the sit position, praise him, hug him, or give him a treat.

You may have to show your dog what to do many times. It may take 10 times! When you think he knows the word "Sit", try it without helping him. If he doesn't do it, don't say anything, just put him into the correct position.

Praise him even if you help him!

Important: When you give the command to "Sit", say it only once. Never repeat it more than once, or your dog will learn that he doesn't have to sit the first time. If he doesn't sit the first time, just show him how again and say "good boy", even if you help him!

- COME HERE! -

Everyone wants their dog to come when they call them and they want them to arrive quickly. Coming when called is simple if it is fun and rewarding for your dog.

Try this for any age dog:

Have a friend help you. You can use a treat if you like or just lots of enthusiasm. Leave your leashed dog with your friend and you walk about 20 meters away. Your friend should hold on to your dog until you say, "Piloto, come here!" (of course use your own dog's name!). As soon as you say "Come here", your dog will run to you letting the leash drag behind him. When he arrives, reward him with the treat or lots of hugs and kisses or both.

Repeat this several times over many days. You can stay at a distance of 20 meters and gradually move to a farther away. After your dog has become reliable, you can remove the leash, but ALWAYS stay in a fenced area!

You can practice 'Come Here' almost anywhere. When the two of you are out for a walk, surprise your dog by backing up and calling his name. He will turn and run to be with you.
