<html> Topic 9

Frame-Up

This week's goal:

Frames are one way to set up navigation for a web site that give a designer control over presentation. This week we will examine what the advantages and disadvantages of frames are. You will master the tags such as <frameset> and <noframes> to "frame-up" your information.

What to do this week:

1. If your browser reads and displays frames, this week's unit should appear in a frame format. If it does, use "View>Page Source" to examine the html code. How does it differ from other pages?

2. Browse the web and find some sites that use a frame format. View their source code also.

3. Read the comments in the highlighted <frame> link below.

4. Read chapter 13 in Raggett on HTML 4.0 or material about framesets in the text of your choice. The "Readings" link below includes other resources that explain frames. In particular, you may find Elizabeth Castro's HTML 4 for the World Wide Web has a more gentle approach to frames.

5. Try the quiz if you find it useful.

6. For this week's web page submission you will be asked to do a simple frameset page, with its no frames alternative. If you plan to use frames for your semester project, you do not have to do this week's submission. You will demonstrate your mastery of frames in the project instead.

If you need help, post your questions to the ListServ. If you can answer a question that is posted, please do so.
