Artist Statement
Many of my paintings are depictions of interior spaces. These interiors are representations of the milieu within the subconscious. The addressing of the subconscious has been a prevalent theme in my work for the last two and a half years. My own memories and dreams are used to develop my iconography which aids in the interpretation of a metaphoric undertanding of the psyche.
While memories and dreams are fragmentary aspects of the whole person, they are also what informs us of what is unique in the individual. The depictions in my compositions are confined and layered to act as a fragmentary ideas which can come together as a cohesive whole.
It is essential that I am able to record as many of these insights as possible, and this is often done by painting over previous compositions; a palimpsest of sorts. The brushmarks represent the subtleties and nuances which the unconscious reveals to the conscious mind. The brushmarks which make up the underpainting give the final visual product a sense of its own history.
My paintings are a description of a persons ability to individuate in a society of many empty traditions and false conventions.
