The Spiritual Journey

On Love....August 14, 1999

Love...that mysterious human condition that, to this very day, defies adequate description. I am referring to the love of a lifetime partner, and not parental love, sibling love, or friendship love. Bearing this in mind, I cannot be so arrogant as to posit that I have found the key to unlocking the enigma, that I can in any way put into words what could come close to rendering justice to that fundamental human need.

Ah, but there is the crux of the matter. How is it that such a primal indigence resists dissection by a species that postulates superior intelligence?

I have some theories.

Given my upcoming marriage in just over a month, and in the late wake of a rancorous divorce, I have found myself pondering the elusive essence of amour. One failed relationship certainly taught me what love is not:

Love is almost never in the person one is first intimate with.
Love is not an assertion of adulthood.
Love is not protection from one's reality.
Love is not a merely a novel idea.
Love is not an escape.
Love is not shelter from the storms of life.
Love is not an assumption.

As to what love is, I have The Goddess to thank for a glimpse of that, and for the confidence I possess in the few fundamentals on love that I can articulate:

Love is a dynamic experience.
Love resists description because only when one embodies it does one know that it can never be delineated.
Love is a living entity invoked by the power of two kindred spirits within whose self-love lies the seeds.
Love's language is native only to the two who conceived it.
Love is rare, an endangered species, nurtured and protected by very few, envied and avowed by the majority. If it were not so, our planet would know an entriely different reality.

In attempting to relay the depth of her love for me, The Goddess asks me to look up to the evening sky. Only after I finish counting all the stars I regard will I come closer to reaching an understanding of her love for me. It gives me great joy, peace, and serenity to know our spirits have an eternity to count them together.
