Midnight...
....and I have been suffering from insomnia these last few days. This morning, I got to sleep at around 6:00am, early enough to catch a mere four hours, late enough to hear those same birds resume their song. This time, it was to the sun's slow, yet ever illuminating rise. By the time I felt my eye lids were heavy, and that I was entering that wonderful, imaginative void between sleep and wake, the birds were performing encores, and it was full daylight.
The weather here has been chaotic lately. With the exception of today, which was rather warm and balmy, it has been cool, sometimes downright cold. Yet, every day brings an unpredictable mixture of sun, rain, and strong winds. It can be bright one minute, and a thunder shower the next. It certainly hinders any summertime plans one wants to make, even if those activities solely mean hanging laundry out to dry.
It has been great for our garden, though. The basil is bursting with fragrant new growth. Standing on the steps, one can smell their sweet, pungent odour, bringing fourth the anticipation of all the fall and winter recipies that will most surely include them. The cilantro is starting to bloom, the cosmos sporting strong, sturdy stalks which will soon bring fourth fresh flowers. Our patch of mixed wildflowers is a lush, vibrant green, already sporting blooms of violet and white, with the promise of a full pallette in the near future.
And let us not forget the mouse carcass that Gull left in offering to us right in the middle of the dill.
The Goddess and I were doing even better today. Part of this, I believe, is because I ran some long put off errands that needed to be done. An even larger part was that I left the house and spent some time with Lowlandz early in the afternoon. It afforded a much needed distraction. An even larger part was Alyx's impromptu visit mid afternoon. Sporting coffees all round, as well as a nasty bruise from his bloodwork today, we chatted and played crib the afternoon away. With his unique wit, charm, and ability to soothe the savage Goddess beast, he never fails to bring domestic harmony in his wake.
With a nap after dinner, and more errands in the late evening, the day seemed to melt away like cream cheese on a freshly toasted bagel.
Hopefully, the melt of sleep will not elude me this night.....
