v Master
Throwing Workshop
Four
days

The Masters Throwing Workshop, a four day intensive hands-on workshop for intermediate and
advanced potters, will focus on advanced throwing concepts. Designed to build skills and
refine technique, the workshop will cover information crucial to structural strength in
the wheel-thrown form and include throwing exercises to increase efficiency.
Students for this class must be able to throw an eight to twelve-inch bowl and a six to
eight-inch vase. The more skilled to the entire group, the further the progress.
To maximize learning, students should plan to throw most of each
day. Work will not be saved. Students should bring 150 lbs. of the clay they
routinely use and their own personal throwing tools. A complete materials list will
be provided and a selection of advanced tools will be available for the
experimentation.
v Eastern
Coil Workshop
Two to
four days
The Eastern Coil method is one of the most valuable techniques for the
construction of asymmetrical forms. A master potters’ tradition, Eastern coil
combines coil technique with potters wheel concepts, providing the greatest wet structural
strength for clay sculpture. The workshop will include information on three-dimensional
composition, design, and international aesthetics.
The four day Eastern coil
workshop is a hands on workshop in which each participant will learn to hand form coils
and build a large form in clay. Concepts critical to structural strength, basic techniques
of coil making and building, and the advanced techniques of boating, bridging, coil
riveting, coil ribbing, and forming appendages will be covered. Students should come with
simple drawings of a form they would like to create. The scale of the work and the size of
the facilities will dictate the number of participants.
In the two day workshop participants work on small forms to
complete exercises designed to teach the basic Eastern Coil concepts listed above. Once
learned, these techniques can be used on a larger scale.
Special tools will be available for use along with directions for making
them.
v Glaze Application Workshop
Two days

The two day workshop, designed for intermediate and advanced potters, will
offer a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on exercises to present advanced
information on glaze application. Learn to 'read the bisque' to make appropriate finishing
choices that balance and/or strengthen the composition. Discover techniques to facilitate
glazing and handle the glaze proficiently. Discuss procedures to standardize within your
studio to increase efficiency, anticipate and prevent glazing flaws and provide consistent
glazing results. Participants should bring bisqued pots and their favorite glazes. A
complete materials list will be provided.
v Clay for TeachersLAY FOR TEACHERS & PARENTS
One day

The workshop is designed to give teachers, parents and anyone else
practical guidance and knowledge about working with children and clay. Ages and stages in
art development and appropriate lessons in clay at each developmental level will be
covered. Information about safety, the properties of clay and its preparation, finishing
and firing will be discussed.
Hands-on experience with specific projects will provide examples of successful clay
activities using minimal equipment and found supplies.
v Dynamics
of Design
Evening
lecture
Freedom of artistic expression grows from the inside out. This workshop
will explore the intuitive nature of individual aesthetics along with the principles and
elements of design. Classical forms originate from complex theories, but fundamental
principles are quite simple. The basic principles and elements of two and three
dimensional design and the application of these principles to any medium will be explored.
Knowing but a few of these universal concepts, anyone can move toward their own personal
freedom of expression.
All that is needed is a chalk board, and slide projector and screen. Participants
should bring their best pots but also problems for critique and advice.
v ConfluenceNLUE
Evening lecture Evening lecture

Freedom of artistic expression spans a lifetime. This
lecture presents an overview of the work of Joyce Michaud, focusing on words and
inspirations that have directed her work and personal research.
All that is needed is a slide projector and screen.
