A Walking Tour of old Jerusalem - The Temple Mount Page 3 of 4

Welcome visitor since 22 June 1999!

Before climbing the stairs to the Dome of the Rock, we pass the fountain of El Kas where hands and feet may be washed prior to prayer.

Beyond the fountain is a magnificent view of the Dome of the Rock through an arcade.

After we climb the stairs, to the left is a domed summer pulpit. Here we can look through the top dome. The sermon is given on the top step, not inside the dome which is reserved only for Mohammad.

On the raised platform is the Dome of the Rock. At the time of these photos some restoration work was being done on the upper superstructure.

The entrance is from the west. The shrine was built by the Caliph Abd-el-Malik in 691 AD. The outside is covered with Persian tiles and marble. At the center of the shrine is a sacred Rock where Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac. The Rock also contains the alleged footprint of Mohammad's horse as he asscended to heaven.

On the last page we will finish our visit to the Temple Mount
