Diary 297

04-20-99

The interview went well. I met with Carla and Debra, and they seemed to approve of everything I said, with much nodding and making agreeing noises. I knew Carla and Debra anyway, so I’m hoping that gives me a bit of an edge. I portrayed myself as friendly, adaptable, driven....all the supposedly good things.

They said they’ll get back to me next week, after all the interviews. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Please.

Today is Dirk’s birthday. He’s turning 21, and is pleased as punch. (I really like that saying. It’s so nonsensical). I got him a guitar pickup, to modify the Les Paul Jr. I got him for Christmas. Apparently, the original pickup is defective.

I’m also buying him ice cream. Chocolate fudge brownie, or some such obscenity. There isn’t going to be a party, as far as I know. Anyway, Dirk has to work until 2 a.m. Jason’s talking about taking him out drinking....and making cute little suggestions about me being the designated drive. Uh-uh. I had enough of that when I first learned how to drive. I am not driving anyone else’s sloppy-drunk ass home. It’s not part of my job description. If they want to get plastered, they can damn well do it in the privacy of their own home.

We went out to get Dirk’s gift last night, and went to this place afterward so Dirk could pick up an application. The office was closed, but he said he talked to some of the people working there and thought it went really well. He’s going to pick up an application tomorrow, when the office is open. Keep your fingers crossed for him, too.

I, like everyone else, am seriously considering those Tae Bo tapes. Are they available at all in stores, or just through mail-order?

I was concerned about what I’d tell my supervisor when I went off to the interview (it’s in the same building). I wasn’t certain if I’d tell her I had a doctor’s appointment, or if I’d simply call in and say I’d be coming in late. In the end, I didn’t tell anyone anything. I just told Alex that I was running an errand in the building. The interview itself only took about half an hour.

I’m still hauling boxes around the building. If nothing else, it’ll be good for my diet. Unfortunately, it’s playing hell with my pantyhose, brushing against the ragged edges of cardboard boxes. I’ll be lucky if this pair lasts through today.

They have these little keychains at theme parks and such, where they take a little picture of your group as you walk in (or other times), and they put it in the keychain. When you hold the keychain up to the light and look through the little eyepiece, you can see the picture with astonishing clarity. I had one of those from my 17th birthday, when Dirk, Katie, my ex and I went to King’s Dominion. I found it yesterday while looking for things to sell at the yard sale on Saturday.

We didn’t really look different back then (except Dirk. He looks much better with long hair.). We’re very different now, though. I’d say tainted, but that’s wrong.....cynical? Experienced? There’s been a noticeable loss of innocence, definitely.

I’m not saying this is even mostly a bad thing. I like myself much more as I am now than I did back then. I have much more respect for Dirk and Katie, too. As for the other – well, some people are incapable of change.

I’m going now. Hopefully today won’t be a repeat of Dirk’s last birthday, where we got in a horrid fight for no good reason. Remember to dance in the rain (where applicable).
