Carousel Applet Tutororialby ~ Bee Spit ~
Announcement----Once the carousel applet is working, it works. Y!/G carries the class files necessary for the Java coding to make the applet work. Once yours is functional, any further loading malfunctions is beecause Y!/G is working on their files or has a section down for maintenance. It is only temporary.
You can make sure that it is this kind of problem, by coming and check mine. If it isn't working then the applet is down. Unless something actually makes your file defective, will anything bee wrong on your end. Or it may bee possible that Y!/G has decided to remove it from use.
So many people were experiencing trouble getting this applet to work, that I decided to write a tutorial. I have been coding the HTML and resizing images for some. I will still do this for those that need.
Ok....first, the applet. You can find the HTML code for the applet here The actual applet is on the Y!/G directory, so you only need to address the location of this applet in the code. There is nothing to download. Just copy and paste the applet code, change your parameters accordingly and insert your own addresses. There is an explantion there about what the parameters mean. Mine is written in plain english, well actually, in Texan. May not BEE highly technical, but my applet works. Ha Ha.
Size of pictures and applet is your major focus.
- Pick your pics.....probably 4 - 6.
- Now comes the math. (yuck!)
- Width and height of pictures.
- You will need a graphic editing program to size your pictures .
- Pick a width somewhere between 180 - 300.
- Pick a height somewhere between 100 - 200.
- Make the jpg's or gif's all the same size.
- Width and height of applet ( will take a bit of tinkering ).
- Take the width of a picture and multiply times 3.
- Add 50 - 80 to that figure.
- This is the applets width. Applet must be at least 250 in total width. ( this will go after name="Image Carousel" )
- Take the height of a picture and add 80 - 160.
- This is the height of your applet.
- If using 4 pictures, go low with these figures.
- When viewing applet in testing, you will know whether to go up or down in the applets width and height.
- Make the width larger to put more space between pics.
- If the applet fails to run, try making the width a little larger, then test.
Parameters
- numimages
- Now you can relax a little....this is just how many pictures you are using.
- backcolor
- Use Hexidecimal codes. Color of background here should match the background color of the page. However, a little trick to use is make the background color here just a bit lighter than the one on the page. It gives a better look to the applet, more of a 3D effect. Please, remember that here you use no # in the color tag.
- showhand
- Yes, if you want a little hand to show when passing over picture for a link.
- No, if you have no links or you don't want the hand.
- speed
- Another no-brainer, high, medium or low. Go for it.
- tilt
- This is the amount of angle you see, high, medium or low. You will just need to play with it and see which one you like.
- washout
- This allows you to set how much of the pics show in the back when the applet turns. High, medium or low. Play with this one too.
- image1, image2, image3 etc....
- You will have as many of these lines as you have pictures. Numbered in order, naturally. 1, 2, and so on.
- Put them in order you want them seen, if it matters.
- Use the whole address of your image, http and all.
- Then a comma.
- Then a link, say your home page or use the pictures as a link to your other pages. Same rule applies here, use whole address, http and all.
- Then a comma.
- Now put to what you referenced your link, page for a page link, or frame. If using frame, you must put a reference comma parent.
- Close Applet
Ta Da......you are done. Ok, not really. Gotta test it now.
- Sometimes you can view an applet in preview. Sometimes you can only view it as a page. So don't pull your hair out yet. Just try both ways.
- Remember, your browser is doing math, so give it a break. It takes a little bit to load.
- If it works. Yippy! You can now just look at it then play with the parameters to purty it up a bit.
- If it doesn't, back to the drawing board. Check your typing for errors. Then whatever else could go wrong. Take a peek at my code.
- Try it again.
- Ok, if it doesn't work, Bee-Mail me and I will look at it for you. Mail me if you can't resize your pics. Also, you can mail me if you don't understand Texan.
Extra Bits You Can Do.
- If you want text.
- Add text on a picture in a graphics program.
- Use text in place of a picture. Make it a graphic, either transparent or solid.
- Treat them as you would a picture.
- Put the carousel in a frame.
- Make a table for the applet and use the border tags.
- Just play with the size of the applet and the tilt to get desired effect.
Here is my applet. This applet is also one of my Lovepages, called 'A Day From a Dream'.
(Oh please, let it work! *grin*)
See an example of a Carousel Applet with transparent circular pictures here.
Carousel Applet is provided for Y!/G Homesteaders by Intel Corporation
Tutorial written a long time ago ... may not be be able to use applet any more.

Tutorial written by me. ~ Hope it helps you.
I made the Bee Buttons in Paint Shop Pro.
My friend Hayseed, resized the original pics a long time ago,
until I got PSP and could rework them. Thanks
