ENEMIES OF THE STATE

Set & Setting

Act I and Act III, Planting and Harvesting, take place in "the patch" somewhere in the Central California mountains. Act II, Tending, takes place in Banaras, India, on the banks of the holy Ganges. Props for Acts I and III should include chicken wire, grow bags filled with soil, watering cans, hose, fertilizer, camouflage netting, seedling trays and lots of greenery. In the patch there is a campfire Center Stage fed by a smoldering log on top of which sits a teapot. There is an upper and lower patch, some action taking place off-stage and in-between. There is a suggestion of a house or temple high in the mountains where Doctor Dog lives. A picture of Shiva, supreme yogi of the Hindu trinity adorns a tree near the campfire. In Act II the action takes place on the ghats, or steps, leading down to the water and the campfire of the growers becomes the dhuni, or sacred fire, of the sadhus. In the background can be seen the government Ganja Shop and Cop Shop, temples and funeral pyres of the cremation area. A trident with marigolds hanging from it is set in the ground near the dhuni and pictures of various Hindu deities can be seen on the walls of the temples. Heavy incense is in the air and the faint strum of a sitar or roll of a tabla can often be heard in the background for punctuation or mood. In Act III music can be War Of The Planets, mars, Jupiter and mercury and the final scene with Mary and Jesse a long, low and lonely saxophone playing God Bless America.
