TMPGEnc

TMPGEnc is a nifty program that really helps to get rid of the interlacing that plagues almost all DVDs.  The method that I'm going to use may not be the best, but it is the simplest.  If you want to do this manually, refer to doom9.net for a complete walkthrough.  Note that if TMPGEnc v2.01.30.116 does not work, you may need to use TMPGEnc v2.00.29.113 instead.  It is highly recommended that you do not skip this procedure since it can get rid of 90-99% of the interlacing.

1.  Startup TMPGEnc.exe.  Then choose the DVD2AVI project file you saved on the previous page in the "Video source" field.  After that, click on the Setting button.

2.  In the Video tab, enter the values as follows.

3.  Click on the Advanced tab.  We will first determine the deinterlace field to select.  Highlight the deinterlace option and double click to bring up the options menu.  You can scroll down from the list of options to see which field order best suits your video.  To do that, you will have to scan through your video using each field order (do this by pressing the left/right button on your keyboard).  If the video is jerky, then you have the wrong field order.  The video should run smoothly and without any sudden jerks if the field is correct.  Remember this field order for the next step.

4.  Now go back to the main option screen and put a check on Inverse telecine.

5.  Double click on the "Inverse telecine (User setting)" to open up the settings menu.  On drop option, choose 24 fps.

6.  Click the Auto-setting button.  Choose 24 fps (Flicker priority) and choose the correct deinterlace field order you found in the previous step.  This setting works for most DVD, however, if you find your output not satisfactory, you can choose a different Deinterlace method.  Click Start and the program will scan the video file and attempt to get rid of all the interlaced sections.  This will take 30 min - 2 hours depending on your hardware and length of your file.

7.  Save your TMPGEnc project when its done.
