Frequently Asked Questions.
- How the reget function works?
Sometimes you start downloading a big file. If remote Web server
is too busy or connection is slow, the file download
could be broken. In this case, Web Downloader will try to reconnect
with server and continue downloading. Many servers support reget now.
If the connection could not be established with the server, when
trying to reget, then Web Downloader will not try to reget it again.
- What does it mean Java classes support?
Now Java classes become more and more popular in Web pages.
Many Offline Browsers can download them. However, you may
experience some problems with them:
- MS Internet Explorer raises Security error when Java class
tries to load something from local disk.
- Many Java .class files could refer to other files or Java classes.
Most other Offline Browsers do not investigate them and the loaded
page appears to be incomplete in this case. Java class file simply
refuses to load when browsing offline.
Web Downloader offers better support for Java. First, it includes
internal Web server, which solves the MS IE security problem.
Second, it parses Java .class files to find related files and classes
and loads them.
These features are implemented in Web Downloader 2.2a and higher.
You may sometimes notice that many files (some with .class extension)
cause '404 Not Found' error. This is because Web Downloader checks every
possible link included in Java applet. Some of them may appear to be
void, but other will lead to real files.
- What is the 2.2a Maintenance release version?
Unfortunately, I had not much free time and development of 3.0 version
was delayed. However while developing Web Downloader 3.0 I made
a lot of bugs fixes and improvements. I decided to publish the 2.2
version update. However, you may notice some strange things with it:
- After localized version update some menu entries or strings
appear in English, while other stay translated.
It is because the
translation will take much time and it will be made for next major
release of Web Downloader.
- There is no updated Help file for 2.2a version.
This happened also
because there is no time now to translate Help file into several
existing languages.
- I have just loaded Web Downloader 2.2a. Should I download the
whole German Web Downloader 2.2 file or there is a way to download
only translated Help file?
Yes, I will publish in few days
small archive files, containing only translated Help file and UI
strings. You will be able to find them in the Download section.
- What are all the .primary files in the download
directory?
The .primary files has one function - they are original copy of
downloaded HTML files. Since Web Downloader modifies links on
downloaded pages I have to keep original pages. When some page
appears to be not modified Web Downloader takes the .
primary file and follows original links in it. Some HTML
files could be the same as .primary files. It is because
I don't have to modify links like HREF="somefile.htm" or
SRC="someImg.gif". I modify only links beginning with
"/" and "http://" so that they would point to local copies of
downloaded files.
P.S. Offline Explorer 2.0 and higher versions do not create .primary files.
- I can view downloaded images using Windows Explorer but the Web
Page in browser (Netscape Navigator) contains many pictures with a '?'
sign.
I guess you've selected "Translate links for Web server" option. In this mode
browser couldn't find paths for some downloaded files. Try to switch to "Translate
links for Offline browsing" mode.
- I'd like to have ability to launch downloads from a command line.
I.e. interface with another scheduler.
It is possible since 1.00.23 version. You may specify items numbers in command
line starting from 0. For 2.0 version put folder name, the "/" slash and item number
for each one. For example - WebDown.exe OSP/2 Auto/0 .
- Is it possible to capture the site ( 0...5 deep ) by just
clicking an icon on the browser screen (similar to Freeloader) - and will
you be looking to do this in the future?
Yes, I am trying to simplify usage of Web Downloader. In 2.1 version
you may drag-and-drop links from browsers to Web Downloader. The other
way is to right-click on a link in browser and select Copy Link
Location. Then switch to Web Downloader and press Ctrl-P.
This will add new Item to it. Note: currently you may
drag-and-drop only text links. Drag-and-drop links represented with
graphics will be added in future.
- What does it mean JavaScript support?
Many Web sites contains dynamic graphics and advertisement. Some pages
include menus and different popups. Most of these fancy things
implemented in JavaScript. Usually when you download such pages with
different offline browsers, all extra graphic files used in JavaScript
programs are missed. Web Downloader 2.1 and higher allows you to
download them. All you have to do is to turn on Enable Script
Processing switch in Add/Modify Item dialog, Advanced
Tab. It is turned off by default.
- I want to translate Web Downloader to a different
language. What I must do?
Well, it's quite easy now in 2.2 version. Write me and I will send you
two files. One is .RTF version of Help file. The second is text file
for User Interface translation. Then send me translated files and I
will publish Web Downloader with a new language. You may also
establish a mirror of Web Downloader Home page.
Note: Most of these questions were taken from users' letters.
