Ladies and gentlemen, the near future brings us a new world of knowledge and technology. The present and future times will bring newfound power in the world of genetics. This technology is stirring controversy throughout our society. Religion, governments, politicians, bishops, leaders, and common folk all have an opinion of what to do. Right now, there is one such subject that never before has been debated so intensely as the subject of human/canine hybrids, or introducing a new "evolution" of canines.
There are those such as myself who believe that we should go forward with the change of canines into our own likeness of Man. We should give them the form, the knowledge, and the ability to decide between good and evil. I ask you all, is there any other creature on earth more deserving of this gift?
Throughout our history, dogs have been by our side. They have helped us hunt for food to survive. They have helped us protect our land. They have fought beside us in our wars. They have even helped us fight crime. On a more personal level, they have protected our homes. They have been our companions during our times of sorrow. They have been a source of joy in our times of peace. They have unquestionably earned the title, "Man's best friend." With this in mind, I believe that they have earned the right to stand beside us as equals.
Now, the greatest opposition is in the religious community. They fight for reasons many find valid. They say that nature and God never intended for these creatures to exist. They firmly believe that it is a sin for us to "play God." The power to create and/or destroy life does not a god make! Our society has been "playing God" throughout history. Our courts decide who lives and who dies. Our government decides to place laws governing what is right and what is wrong. Do our doctors not make the lame walk
and the blind see? Do our women create life through birth or destroy life through an abortion? Wouldn't these acts also be called "playing God?"
It takes more than creating life to become gods. We must have God's compassion for his children. To have the wisdom to guide these children of society, to have the power to forgive their mistakes, and to have the patience for the time to teach these children. If God can do this for us, His creations, His children, then we can do this for them, our children.
Another matter that involves religion is the following scenario: what if they who are without the original sin choose to follow God under their own free will? Let's look at ourselves first. Since we are all burdened by Adam's original sin, we have an obligation to God to repent and ask for forgiveness, but since they are without sin, they have no obligation whatsoever, yet they wish to follow God's ways. I ask the
church: should the church refuse these beings? If so, is it because they fear the realization that our children just might be holier than us?
Finally, for society itself. I wholly believe that the people should vote on this before we move forward with the creation of a new intelligent species, before our society decides to give birth to a potential new society. If the people choose no, then so be it. Maybe our society isn't ready for this. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be after all. But, if our society does choose yes, chooses to take the risk, then let us do this the right way. Let us show them our good side, our just side, and our fair side,
just like what God did for us, and just like what a parent does for a child.
