12/20/2008 00:43:51 Finding myself in a job hunt in the middle of a recession, I am tempted to buy the story that times are hard. I have to remember that 93% of the workforce is working today. So, to reassure myself in my job search, and to put it into perspective, it would be a good idea to look at how I fared in past recessions. Let's see when they were:
Source: PTI Securities & Futures Weekly Newsletter, 12/8/2008 My entire childhood was dependent on a U.S. government employee, so recessions were not part of my consciousness at all. In 1974 I was in the U.S. Coast Guard, a government employee myself. In 1980 and 1982 I was in college, so the concept of a recession was still irrelevant. The first recession of which I became aware, was 1991. I was a contractor, and I found several opportunities. During that period, while people who were staying put in their jobs found their raises going up less than inflation, my billing rate went up 15% to 20%, depending on the contract. In fact, I didn't even know that was a recession until ten years later, when Business Week told me about it in retrospect. The big recession in my experience was 2001. At that time I was teaching on a contract at SFSU, and I had one of the best years in my entire career. Teaching industry professionals in an intensive curriculum, averaging 50 hours a week in front of the classroom, I was working constantly and enjoying the whole experience. Now, I am back in the competition, and opportunities for contractors and for "full-time" employees are about the same. In retrospect, I can see that my billing rate hasn't changed much, and my skill set is still attracting customers. I can still prosper in a recessionary environment, and that is my plan.
Tue Dec 9 10:23:31 PST 2008 The San Francisco Spiritual Enrichment Center is searching for a new minister. The Center composed this treatment in a co-creation workshop last weekend: There is One Life. It is everywhere present. It is the Life of every member and friend of the Center. It is the Center. And it is the Life of our Spiritual Leader. Our Spiritual Leader is a Global Heart Visionary who lives in principle. Our Spiritual Leader is a loving, prosperity-conscious, creative and vibrant Master Teacher. Our Spiritual Leader is worldly, wise, and has business savvy. We gratefully celebrate our union with joy, knowing it already exists in the Mind of God. We release this treatment into the Law, knowing it is done, perfect and complete. And, so it is.
