Get your own Free Home Page12/20/2007 Winter Solstice The first day of winter is probably the oldest of the Sun celebrations. It's not hard to understand. This is pretty obvious. The Sun has been getting lower in the sky every day. The further north you are, the lower the Sun appears. If you're on the Arctic Circle, on this day the Sun will not rise. And, as everyone notices, it gets cold, too. So, it would be nice to get that Sun to come back. Rise, Sun, rise! The Navajo and Apache take the job of bringing the Sun back pretty seriously. The Aztecs, the Maya, and the Celts were not above sacrificing humans to get the job done. If you should decide to replace an old god with a new one, say one you decide to call the Christ, this would be a good time for His birthday, too. You'll notice these Roman calendars precess a bit. This year, 2007, the astronomical moment of the Winter Solstice is on 12/21 at 10:08 pm PST.
