Subject: re: Signature on site

An interesting little topic...

I have heard some good arguments on both sides:

argument 1:

A signature can add warmth and familiarity to an otherwise 'sterile'
electronic document thereby allowing the average joe 'connect' with it.

argument 2:

A signature has no place on a web site, as the electronic/HTML medium of
the web is the antithesis of the actual purpose of a real signature on a
document.

MY argument would reflect on both of these. I can say that the thoughts in
#1 do make some sense, but the fact remains that the signature, itself, is
a mass-produced, rather unfriendly signature.

Similiar to #2, there is nothing I hate worse than receiving a letter in
the mail that ends with a photocopied/printed signature. It's obviously a
mass-produced piece of literature, why insult my inteligence by pretending
that the letter is 'personal' with a printed signature?

I don't think there is a right answer to this, but I just thought I'd add
more fuel to the fire...

Hi babble-kinder,

I've been on this Holy Grail search for some time now, and since you all
deal with both halves of this thorny problem, I thought I'd try the
babble-den.

More and more of our technical manuals are going HTML. We manufacture
networking hardware and software. My problem lies in getting screen
captures (mostly from Windows) of our software reduced enough in size to
fit on a reasonable size HTML page and still look good (readable).

Of course I've heard the all legends (the original MacDraw was supposed to
have a great reducing algorithm) so I'd appreciate hearing from people with
first hand knowledge only.

BTW, our production platform is now all Windows95 but I'm desperate and I'd
consider any suggestions for Windows, Mac or Unix.

Much thanks for everyone's help. I've been reading the digest version of
Babblebox for some time now and learned a lot.

High Regards,

Collin

Well, I have finally tracked down "Color It", possibly the only low-cost
Macintosh alternative to Photoshop, and comparable in quality and scope
to Paint Shop Pro, the Windows Photoshop alternative.

It usually costs U$149.95 but it is on sale for U$30 from its
manufacturer, MicroFrontier. They also have other deals too, combo deals
to do with buying filters and paying $49.95 for Color It..

There is no alternative. Photoshop is penultimate. If you can't afford
it, save money until you can buy it. If you're bad with money, beg. If
you can't stand begging, have all of your relatives chip in and buy it for
you as an (Xmas) gift. If you can't stand asking for an early Xmas gift,
go to a university's graphics art lab and start using it there. If you
can't stand driving to a university to use a copy of Photoshop, crumble and
just _find a way to buy it._ There is no choice. There is no alternative.
_Get it._

And, no, I don't work for Adobe.

It's really easy and everyone should keep this trick in their toolbox. I
had the problem with one of my pages so I just started taking over their
frameset. Here's the code:

<SCRIPT language=JavaScript>
<!--
if (self.parent.frames.length != 0)
self.parent.location="http://your.url.here.com/";
// -->

It works by checking to see if there's a parent frame (if their is the
self.parent.frames.length is always greater than zero) then if so taking
over that frameset. It will act recursively until nothing is left in the
browser window but your page.

Yep. Place these lines after the <HEAD> tag in the page in question:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!--
if (top.frames.length!=0)
top.location=self.document.location;
//-->
</SCRIPT>

This works, if you want to pop in the URL on every page of your web site
you use that script. What I wanted for my site was a script that I could
just slap into server-side include - and not have to insert a new URL in
every page. So, I came up with this version:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!--
// Copyright (c) 1997-1998 Christopher Schmitt.
// http://www.christopher.org/
// License is granted if and only if this entire
// copyright notice is included. By Christopher Schmitt.
setTimeout ("letmeloose()", 2500);
function letmeloose() {
if (self.parent.frames.length != 0)
self.parent.location=window.location;
}
// -->
</SCRIPT>

The "window location" translates into English as being the page the script
is placed in. I've found this to be much easier to handle and administer on
my site with SSI's.

Which really begs the question - if I were to decide to use the
self.parent.frames.length method and a setTimeout as opposed to calling the
function by using onLoad in the BODY tag, would I have to hunt around to
see if anybody else has done this before?

Is there a resource that will tell me if I am infringing any copyrights
since apart from naming it "letmeloose()" it is quite likely that I would
have used the same script is it not? after all - JavaScript is quite rigid
at times.

For example, of the two main types of image rollovers that people use,
maybe some chappy decided to copyright it - and maybe, just maybe, he was
the first person to have written that set of instructions - though most
probably it had been used a million times prior to his copyright - so I
wonder, can one really copyright such basic functions in JavaScript. I've
seen people attempt to "copyright" their page layout, and all it was was a
nested table!

Hey Collin.

Try turning your anti-aliasing off. This will prevent your pain program
from creating uneccasay colors when you reduce your screen shot. Reduce you
shot to which ever dimensions you need to. Then index the colors to a 16
color palette, since a screen shot of a Windows program will most probably
already be 16 colors. This should bring your file size down dramatically.
Hope this helps!

porter beat me to it (what else is new?). but here's an alternate solution
from the same family. start your BODY tag thusly:

<BODY onLoad="if (self != top) top.location = self.location" etc. etc....>

no javascript commenting necessary with this solution. browers that don't
get it will ignore it.

most frames-capable browsers are javascript-capable, so this little trick
gets you out of hot water most of the time -- on your own sites as well as
when linked from incompetent or inconsiderate frames-based external sites.

you can even use it for low-grade special effects (loading a page inside a
frame and then popping it up outside the frame without re-caching or
calling up a new frameset).

i use this all the time.

cheers.
