Patterns and Textures - The Math Behind the Art

All the patterns and textures here were created solely from the tools within Photoshop. They are the result of reiterations of filters, curves and other tools.

Sometimes when you repeat a function enough times, you start to see evidence of the mathematical algorithm upon which the function was based. I love repeating functions over and over and seeing what kind of pattern will evolve. For example, if you break down a gradient enough, you will start to see the bands that it is made of. The mechanical components in the swalker series were all created this way.

None of this artwork would ever have been created without the advent of math-based digital imaging programs.
