What is DNS?

What is DNS? What does it do?
  • DNS or, Domain Name Server is a big database that contains the information needed to connect to a web page.
  • For example: you type in http://www.yahoo.com, it looks in the database for www.yahoo.com and when it finds it, then gives the browser the IP address (which is 204.71.200.68 for Yahoo!) and your computer connects the Yahoos' computer and downloads the web page you requested.
  • Another example would be that of e-mail. You get connected to your e-mail server (e.g. pop.yourmail.com) and it needs to find the IP for your e-mail server, so you can connect to the server, and start the download of your e-mail. Click here for more info on how your E-Mail Client works
