"Write Once, Use Many Times" |

|
Once it was popular among technical communicators to look down
on single sourcing. They viewed creating help files from book files as a lazy workaround that resulted in
an inferior product, and preferred to create separate help files that used all of the technical features of a different tool.
Times have changed. In these days of tight budgets, technical communicators may need to produce marketing and training material as well as their customary manuals and help systems. Techniques and technologies that increase their productivity are now welcome friends, not just labor-saving tools. Enter content reuse. Content reuse goes beyond using the same content to produce online help from selected portions of the user manual. With appropriate planning and design, text can be repurposed, for example, specific pieces of information from the user manual can be reassembled to form the major portion of a new marketing brochure. |
