Biography: |
Ly Cong Uan was the commander of the capital's guards of the Early Le Dynasty. After the last Early Le Dynasty ruler (Long Dinh) died, the officers asked him to succeed, since the Early Le Dynasty had lost popular support, and the people were really upset by Long Dinh's cruel leadership.

Achievements: |
Ly Thai To was a great ruler. During the Early Le Dynasty's final years, things were either delayed or came to a complete halt due to wars and cruel leadership. However, once Ly Thai To was enthroned, he put things back in order. One of the most important events that happened during his first year of ruling was he moved the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long (nowadays Ha Noi). With a futuristic vision, he foresaw that Hoa Lu was too small and crowded, not a good place for further growth. Thang Long remained to be Vietnam's capital till today, but the name was changed to Ha Noi. A very religious ruler, in 1018, he sent several monks to China to obtain Buddhist books. He held great respect for Buddhism and helped spread the religion around the nation, for he was raised by a monk. Ly Thai To was a warrior too, for he was a commander before taking the throne. During his time, he personally led troops to quell rebellions in the mountainous areas. Ly Thai To ruled for 19 years. He died in 1028.

Criticisms: |
None. Ly Thai To opened up a new era for Vietnam. During his enlightened years of ruling, Vietnam began a Golden Age where arts, economy, and culture flourished. I would give him a 9 out of 10 rating for his accomplishements.
