Threats to Sea Turtles

sea turtles are threatened by much
and those who wish to help them are few
a lot of things we think are normal kill them
are you a threat? are you?

Of course, the MAJOR threats are not caused by an average shrimp-eating, tortoise-shell-glasses wearing, beach-condo-dwelling human such as yourself.

If you fit the above three characteristics, here's what you need to do:

STOP EATING SHRIMP
GET RID OF THOSE GLASSES
SELL THAT CONDO

I'll tell you why

The NUMBER ONE cause of sea turtle death is drowning in shrimp nets. Unless you buy Earth Island's TURTLE SAFE SHRIMP, there is no guarantee that the crustacean you bite into did not come from a net which ensnared a Kemp's ridley, ruthlessly holding her under the water and eventually causing a slow, painful death by drowning.
Real tortoise-shell glasses are made from--you guessed it--real tortoise shell. Often, this shell is a hawksbill's carapace, and the hawksbill is an endangered sea turtle. A very endangered sea turtle. Because all turtles are very endangered.
Note: if your glasses are imitation shell, they are OK
Lights from beachside condos look like the stars shining over the water to hatchling turtles. When a newborn turtles peeks out of the shell, instinct tells it to go to sea. Well, if there are lights in both directions, the brighter ones often win out. And the brighter lights are the condo lights. 90 baby turtles, all traveling away from the sea. Eventually, they will cross a road. Cars travel on roads. A two-inch long turtle versus a Hummer.
