The knife handle has been made from"Iron-wood", inlaid with a brass wheat-head, and bonded between layers of black linen micarta and "Russian sugalite"
Ironwood (Austromyrtus acmenoides), is one of the oldest Australian timbers. It is a strong working material that has traditionally been used by the Aboriginals for tools, weapons and clap sticks for making music.
Russian Sugalite is a a composite reconstructed stone, that varies from intense lavender to deep purple in colour. It is used in fine custom jewellry and high-grade cutlery handles. Some have called this gem the love stone.
The handle was been hand-crafted by reknowed craftsman Ivan Wilcken. He chose each of these elements for their significance to Julia and Daniel.. |
