THE ORGANIZATION
Founded in 1945, as the Soil Conservation Society of America, by leaders of the soil conservation movement, including Hugh Hammond Bennett, the "Father of Soil Conservation".
Mission Statement: The Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) is a non-profit scientific and educational organization. SWCS serves as an advocate for the conservation profession and for science-based conservation policy. The mission of SWCS is to foster the science and art of soil, water and related natural resource management to achieve sustainability.
The name was changed in 1987 from the Soil Conservation Society of America to the Soil and Water Conservation Society. The change reflects the Society's interest in soil and water conservation and the organization's international membership and scope of activities.
A nonprofit, scientific, and educational organization. Classified under Internal Revenue Service regulations as a 501(c)(3) organization, all contributions, including membership payments, are tax deductible under the provisions of the Tax Reform Act of 1986.
The National Society is governed by a Board of Directors composed of members representing nine regions of North America: Northeast, Southeast, South Central, East North Central, West North Central, Northern Plains, Southwest, West and Canada. The Board also includes an at-large member and a student representative. The Board meets regularly to establish policy for the organization.
The Montana Chapter is also governed by an Executive Board of Directors composed of a president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer, a newsletter editor and directors representing the Eastern, Northern, Northwestern, Southern, and Southwestern portions of the state.
