PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES
Annual meetings of the SWCS afford members the opportunity to stay abreast of developments in land and water conservation and to exchange views with collegues. Each year the Montana Chapter hosts an annual technical conference on a issue affecting Montana's natural resources. This conference is normally held the last part of January in a location across the state.
The Journal of Soil and Water Conservation is the flagship of SWCS publications and member services. The quarterly magazine is a source of continuing education and technical information for members and nonmembers alike. Regular features include general interest articles, research reports, guest editorials and commentary, book reviews, and current events. For information on submitting articles, write for a copy of the JSWC Editorial Guidelines.
The bimonthly "Conservogram" keeps members informed about SWCS programs and activities. The Conservogram is sent electronically or can be viewed by logging on to the national SWCS website at: www.swcs.org.
Special publications on land and water resource issues are also issued by the Society. Members receive discounts on SWCS book.
Conferences on land and water management concerns are sponsored by the Society and its chapters. Members receive a discount to meetings and conferences.
An extensive awards program recognizes members and nonmembers for their achievements in the contributions to land and water conservation. For details, write SWCS and ask for the Awards Manual.
Chapter services offered by the Society to chapters range from newsletter printing and mailing to assistance with regional meetings.
The hallmark of SWCS's educational program is a series of award-winning conservatioin cartoon booklets. Amoung the six titles are "Robots of Cave Alpha: Creating a Livable Land", "Make Room for Monsters and Wildlife on the Land", and "Plants: Improving our Environment." These booklets help elementary school students understand man's relationship to the natural world. Write SWCS for a booklet brochure.
SWCS sponsors three scholarship programs: the Scholarships in Conservation go to college and university junions and seniors enrolled in conservation-related curricula, the Donald A. Willims Soil Conservation Scholarships are offered to members wanting to imporve their professional competancy, and the Kenneth E. Grant Research Scholarship is for graduate-level research. Deadlines for application are in the spring of each year; write SWCS for details on each program.
