Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Australia
except in homes like mine .. cos I'm married to an American :).

So.. we'll have Roast Turkey.  Pumpkin pie made from scratch. Corn and all the trimmings and because he's a Southern  boy we'll have some blackeyed peas and yep.. I may even rustle up some Grits on the side.  We'll call his folks in Georgia to say Hi and thank his Mom for the recipe for Devilled Eggs..
And I will do what I do every day.  I will be thankful for  whatever power brought us together and keeps us that way.

I will be thankful for many things, not the least of which are the treasured friends I've made in this weird cyber world.  You know who you are.  Know also that you fill my life with joy and give my heart hope for humanity.

I am fortunate to count many Native Americans as my friends. For this reason, I have included on this page a link to an area that, if you are not of indigenous descent, you may prefer not to go.
Why? Because it may remind you of moments in history that you would prefer not to think about.  Please just remember that not every American views Thanksgiving as a time for celebration and not everyone looks back on the Pilgrims with affection.  Much suffering was inflicted on the original inhabitants of your land and mine in the name of "Settlement".
Many of the occasions we celebrate in Australia, in America and indeed in many other countries, were events in our history that involved the betrayal, eviction  and even wholesale slaughter of indigenous people.  I find no cause for celebration there.

I hope that all of you who look at this time as a time to give thanks for the things in your life that make it worthwhile,  and to let loved ones know you care, have a wonderful, love filled Thanksgiving.  I hope the future gives you much to be grateful for and that the sad times are few and far between.

Spare a thought for those less fortunate.  For many.. too many, the holiday season heralds months of hardship. Struggling to keep warm, to find enough to eat as winters chill settles over the land.  The hand of friendship, extended to those who are desperately in need of a friend would be a wondrous thing. A helping hand, a sharing of what you have, a chance to survive the winter with optimism for what Spring has in store.

Then .. bear in mind that the Indians did just that for the Pilgrims.
And the Pilgrims survived to express their gratitude by slaughtering the Indians and destroying their homes.

Now.. this probably wasn't what you expected as a Thanksgiving Wish.
But we should all remember that atrocities like this have been inflicted on almost every indigenous race in the world.  The suffering they endured needs to be acknowledged.  We cannot continue to disregard and disrespect the original inhabitants of our lands.

Giving Thanks for food, health, prosperity and comfort is a noble sentiment. Those of us lucky enough to enjoy a good life should indeed be grateful. But when you wonder why Indians take a different view  when you are having such a happy time...  keep in mind that what you are  grateful for came at a terrible price.  Paid in Indian blood.
