Many environment technologist are employed in the public
sector. That doesn't pay so much, but you have fixed hours and you are
somewhat safe in your position.
One of the things you constantly have to do is to check on the results, others have made, analyzis results from factory outlets, the towns sewage works and so on. There is much paper work, but also contact with people, both citizens and politicians or civil servants, but also to suppliers to the towns or countys services.
As an municipal environment technologist you must keep an eye on the permits of the companies in town, and the other things which demand approval. You must work out garbage disposal plans, make the citizens and institutions more avare of the environment, track down old pollutions, and so on.
Also, it is you who must advice the towns counsil about how the environments condition is. You must be up to date with the changes in the laws and be ready to tell the town counsil and citizens which rules that apply to them about the environment.
The counties and the government also have environment technologists. They have similar jobs.
You won't be doing much laboratory work when you are a public employee. Usually the laboratory analyzes are done by a laboratory, and you must then see if the results are within the legal limits. But you can make yourself a role in keeping the local environment in order, if you put a bit of effort and time to it.
