BETTA SPLENDEN

What is a Betta?

To most people, when you say Betta, or Siamese Fighting Fish, they think of the very pretty colored fish in the bowls. Some people wonder how they can survive in the little bit of water they call home. For myself, and some of my fellow Betta lovers, we found out just that. Bettas are classified within the suborder Anabantoidei, all the members of this group have an accessory breathing organ called a labyrinth. This allows them to live in places where there is less oxygen, such as the rice paddies of Thailand. Lots of people that live in that area still catch them there. Most bettas in captivity will survive about an average of 2 years, some less some more. Larger, short finned males are still fought in many places of the world. But keep in mind that those fish were spawned for just that purpose, not like the Betta Splendens that we find in our local pet stores, who were spawned to gain the longest fins, and the brightest colors.
