On these pages, a dream is taking shape. It has
been my dream to set up such a site on the World Wide Web, one that accords
the study of Geography some value, which I believe lies in its multi-disciplinary
nature and its applicability to all of us. Too many see Geography for a
mere purpose of explaining the variations in terrain and topography; of
how volcanoes are formed and of how a river system works. The tradition
of Geography to emphasise the physical realm, since the time of Homer,
has now broadened significantly, encompassing the human landscape whose
impact on the physical environment is far too important to ignore. Indeed,
knowing your Geography means realising how El Nino is inadvertently bringing
the much-talked about haze to Singapore; how the Soufriere Hills eruption
is capable of displacing an entire population of the British island of
Montserrat; how the global spread of information through the mass media
is changing the way people look at the world.
I hope this site will become a place where information
is obtained, shared, and perhaps even discussed. I would be happy to add
any site relating to the field of Geography to this archive of Internet
sites, which will certainly be of use to those studying the subject, and
to anyone who just wants to find out more about this complex, mind-boggling
world in which we inhabit.
