Wittenbergplatz U-Bahn station |
---|
A tour of the area between Wittenbergplatz and Zoologischer Garten.
 |
The famous KaDeWe department store. Mostly imports from the
States and elsewhere. |
An unusual fountain, in the vicinity of the U-Bahn. |
 |
 |
I thought that the reinforced concrete pillars on the building in the
back was interesting. |
This bank is a great example of post-modern architecture. |
 |
 |
The aquarium. |
The elephant gate, one of the entrances to the zoo. Named after
the elephants sculpted in the gate. |

This globe studio was originally intended to be a information center
for visitors, where they could get a panoramic view of Berlin. However, that intention didn't
carry through and today it is used as a TV studio. |
Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church).
A neo-Romanesque church that was badly bombed in WWII. The lower glass-concrete building is
the new worship hall, built in the 1950s with some gorgeous stain glass windows. The taller
building is the administrative offices. The bell tower is now a museum. |

On the inside of the bell tower, you can see the beautiful mosaics
on the ceiling. Below are some examples. |

 |
Bahnhof Zoo. The major train station in the middle of the city. You
can take the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, German trains, and trains to international destinations here.
|
I'm not quite sure what this building is for. However, the use of
steel here is interesting, especially in the rounded shape of the roof. |

Theater des Westerns. A theatre devoted to the latest musicals,
usually in German. Currently they're playing "Chicago". |
