Wittenbergplatz

Wittenbergplatz U-Bahn station

A tour of the area between Wittenbergplatz and Zoologischer Garten.

The famous KaDeWe department store. Mostly imports from the States and elsewhere.
An unusual fountain, in the vicinity of the U-Bahn.
I thought that the reinforced concrete pillars on the building in the back was interesting.
This bank is a great example of post-modern architecture.
The aquarium.
The elephant gate, one of the entrances to the zoo. Named after the elephants sculpted in the gate.
This globe studio was originally intended to be a information center for visitors, where they could get a panoramic view of Berlin. However, that intention didn't carry through and today it is used as a TV studio.
Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church). A neo-Romanesque church that was badly bombed in WWII. The lower glass-concrete building is the new worship hall, built in the 1950s with some gorgeous stain glass windows. The taller building is the administrative offices. The bell tower is now a museum.
A close up of the bell tower.
On the inside of the bell tower, you can see the beautiful mosaics on the ceiling. Below are some examples.
Bahnhof Zoo. The major train station in the middle of the city. You can take the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, German trains, and trains to international destinations here.
I'm not quite sure what this building is for. However, the use of steel here is interesting, especially in the rounded shape of the roof.

Theater des Westerns. A theatre devoted to the latest musicals, usually in German. Currently they're playing "Chicago".
