NO EGO'S ATTITUDES, OR POLITICS | ||||||

I have heard that Sifu Dan Inosanto once said something to the effect of "If some people trained as much as they argued the martial arts' world would be much better place." I couldn't agree more. Unfortunatly some people feel as if they have something to prove to others and come in with a bad attitude wanting to fight. When someone comes to our class like that, I follow the advice of World Sambo President Dr. Darrin Pordash and ask them to leave. If they don't, I call security to remove them. Perhaps your thinking, "Hey, your a martial artist, adjust their attitude and remove them yourself. Just get them in the ring and show them that they are'nt all that!" I would reply, "Is that what we try to teach others? When someone challenges us should we fight them on the spot? When someone has a bad attitude, should we beat them up? Perhaps our children have too much of that sort of thinking already." I think it is important to set a moral example all the time, and that includes while were training. We are a bunch of people that come together to train in the martial arts and have a good time while doing it. Uniforms are optional, as we can't tell you what to wear in the event you get into a street fight. We want to increase our strength, endurance, speed, cardiovascular conditioning, self defence ability, confidence, and have FUN! Our belts are used to hold our pants up, or if were wearing a gi, to keep the top closed and give our opponent something to use against us in grappling. Occasionally someone will enter the dojo wearing an unearned blackbelt claiming it's in this or that art. When they spar or grapple to submission, they get beaten by beginner students (By the way it's great to be beaten in training, as it shows us our mistakes like no other way). That is not to say that all belts aren't valid, or even most of them; but there's no way to tell until the wearer steps into some competition. Unfortunatly these days a few people practically sell belt rankings. Some people will even be wearing a black belt (which should signify an expert of a certain style) after having trained improperly for just a little while in a given art. Belts only cost a few bucks you know! Those people are almost impossible to teach, since they usually act like they already know it all. When their lack of expertese becomes evident, they usually complain about something and quit the class. We'd rather people like that just leave their belts at home and come in with a hungry, open mind. If they genuinly have something to offer our club, we will be thrilled to receive it! We have several people that are good at certain aspects of the martial arts, and we love it when they share their knowledge with us all. We aren't concered with belts, certificates, titles, or rankings. If you have something to contribute, or if you'd like to learn from those in our club that do, you are always welcome to train with us!! Just remember, leave your ego, attitude, and politics at home. |
