Before buying a ferret, it is necessary to orientate to know more about this ferret. Since you visit this web-site, you are already gathering info about ferrets. Other sources for getting more information about ferrets :
Where to get your ferret ?
After acquiring enough information and buying all the ferret stuff (cage, food, litter, etc) it is time to find an address to get your new pets. I deliberately mention petS here, because it is always better to buy two or more ferrets. Two ferrets do not take much more time or work, while it is much nicer for the animals not being alone. A ferret can be bought at pet shops, but it is mostly better to get them from a pound or from a private breeder. This because they mostly know better how to treat a ferret at pounds and ferret breeders and therefore will have taken care of the animals in a better way.
At pounds, it is quite possible to find really nice pets sometimes. Most ferrets brought to pounds are older than about half a year, so they are already raised and the final character of the ferret can be known. It will be known at the pound which ferret would suit you best, and you can hear advantages and possible disadvantages there. Getting a ferret from a pound might be a very good idea for people getting there first ferret, since you do not have to learn a ferret of a pound that much anymore and the final character is already known (you know what you get).
Private breeders mostly also know quite a lot about their ferrets. They can and will give you some useful tips when getting your first ferret and maybe also have some information on paper concerning the essential information to know about ferrets. Always ask some of the food given to the ferret at the place where you get them. During the first days you have your new ferret, it is necessary to still give some of the old food. This because ferrets have to get used to new food, so it is better to mix more and more new food with the old one during the first week. If your ferret is old enough (older than 8 weeks !) you can take him/her to the new home.
male or female ?
When buying a ferret, it has to be decided whether to buy a male or female ferret. A female ferret will smell less than a male ferret. Never put two or more non-castrated ferrets together, because these will fight till one of them will die. Castrated males and females go together quite well. One not-castrated male ferret with one or more females is also not a problem in most of the cases.
Puppies can be kept together
with their mother and after 8 weeks also with other female ferrets, but
NEVER with males which have not been castrated.
