This is Patrick, a Hackney pony who got a second chance. Patrick had a freak accident in the pasture that tore off a third of his hoof.
His owner wanted to put him down. The soft tissue of his left hind foot was exposed to dirt, pebbles and bacteria and Patrick was in pain. Kathi Cipriani couldn't stand by and watch Patrick be put down - she wanted Patrick to live. Kathi had an extra stall and decided to take on the challange of nursing him back to health. "There are some who think I'm crazy for doing this, but a lot of people are happy I'm doing it" Cipriani said. "It is easier to understand why I'm doing this after you have met Patrick. He wants to live - you can see it."
The bone was exposed and the risk of infection was high - the stall needed to be cleaned and the bandages needed to be changed at least twice a day. A hydron dressing, which promotes tissue growth is put on first, then a petroleum based gauze, regular gauze and then a diaper and all this wrapped with vet wrap to hold it all in place.
All this care started to really run into some money and Patrick also needed hoof reconstruction and corrective shoeing. Because the hoof continues to grow, the process would have to be repeated every 5 weeks. This is where C.A.P. stepped in and set up a fund for Patrick in which we collected tax deductible donations to be used to defray these medical bills.
PATRICK THANKS ALL OF YOU WHO HELPED HIM OUT!! He is doing great today, thanks to caring people like Kathi and our donors.
