Belive

Bryn

A soft yellow light pierces the thickly falling rain, but to what avail? The batteries of her flashlight begin to fade, the soft light fading as well, she can no longer find her way. She stumbles fowards, desprately searching for shelter from the rain, but she can see nothing. The cloud's above hide all light from her, the pounding rain drowning her voice as she cries for help. Tall dark trees loom all around her. She cries again for help, but alas she had told no one where she had gone. How could she expect them to look for her? She sank to her knees, mud splattering around her, the rain had matted her hair and she no longer botherd to push it away from her eyes. Tears fell from her eyes, tears that blended into the rain and she could not see where they fell. She clenched her fists and cursed herself, then her mother, the weather, the forest, and even God himself. What good were any of them to her if she would not survive the night? Thoughts of so many possible ways to die ran through her mind. She didn't know, what sort of predators lived here. She didn't know, how to survive alone in the woods. She didn't know anything. Just a city kid lost in the woods, drowning in the rain.

She pounded the mud, cursing and screaming. She asked herself why she had come. She blamed her mother for telling her what might lie in the forest. She cursed her mother's lies, there were no such thing as a unicorn. She had been such a fool to try to find one to save the life of her friend. Her friend Vanessa had fallen ill, and no cure was in sight. But even if there were, Vanaessa's parents could not afford it anyways. So she had set out on her own to find a unicorn. She had set out three days ago, her heart beliving her mother's words. She had brought a sleeping bag and a backpack full of food and water, clearly enough to last her a week. But as she slept, some animal had ransacked her bag leaving her only water and the little bit of canned foods, no longer enough to sustain her. She had snuck out in the middle of the night, beliving a unicorn would come to her to ease her friend's pain. She had lost her father to the same sickness Vanessa had caught, and she would not lose her too. She cried and she cursed her mother. Cursed her for making her belive that the power of the alicorn could heal any illness, that strands from thier silken manes would bring peace to any who dared to pluck it, that the cloven hooves upon wich they so daintly walked could be ground into a powder and used in making the sweetest cakes, that the unicorns came to those virgins in pain, that they came to any who sought them out..

She stood again, weary and with nothing left in her heart, not even a glimmer of hope that someone may find her. She began to move forwards again, searching in vain for some sort of shelter from the pounding rain. Anything that may protect her from the rain. She continued to walk, although where her feet took her she knew not. Wet leaves and outstrectched branches occaisionally raked at her, scratching her face. Her tears of pain began to blind her. Tears from being lost, and tears because she could lose her friend. Vanessa would die, and she would never get to say goodbye.

Her head to the ground, she had no clue what to do, and the rain began to slow. She turned her head upwards, the once black glouds shimmerd gray, and patches of the dark sky dotted with silver stars could be seen. Silver moonlight broke through the dense rain clouds, shattering them and lighting her way. Before her was a clear path, one she had been following absent mindedly. The moonlight lighted her way, the forest shimmering and sparkeling silver from it's bath. She walked forwards, ignoring the nagging feeling in her mind, forgetting her pain and agony. She came into a clearing, a small green clearing, with a tiny pond in the center. She looked into the clear water, it's surface so still you could see every pebble upon it's sandy bottom. The grass around her was inviting, and surprisingly dry. She sat upon it, feeling her weariness creeping up on her. She lie down on the grass, her eyelids becoming heavy. She let her eyes slide shut slowly, and her dreams were empty as her she slept.

She awoke, a light shining in her eyes, and an unacustomed warmth near her stomach. She carefully opend her eyes, to see a beautiful creature resting it's head upon her. Her eyes filled with tears at the beauty of it, she was afraid to move, not because she thought it would be afraid of her, but because she feared that anything might shatter the moment. The head lay upon her stomach lightly, the mane the color of moonlight, resting upon her soiled clothes. The fur was so white, so white that it glowed. It's eyes were closed, long silken silvery lashes fluttering gently in the small breeze. It was curled comfortably near her, it's legs folded beneath it. One of it's back hooves lay effortlessly near her, the cloven hoove sparkeling like a diamond. The tail lay upon the green grass, looking as though someone had spilt moonlight upon it. It's sides rose and fell gently in rythm with it's breathing, a silver spriraled horn thrust from the center of it's forehead. She blinked once, realizeing with dismay how uncomfortable she was. She tried to roll onto her back, but could not do so without awakening the creature. It raised it's head and looked at her, it's purple eyes glistening with a light not even all the darkness in the world could put out. They were wise and full of peace, and what she saw in them could not be discribed in mere words.

As if drawn by a string, she gently reached out her hand to touch it. The desire to touch the silken fur was overwhelming, and she slowly reached out to it. It snorted angirly, and rose to it's feet, backing away from her. She jerked her hand back, surprised. It's eyes were blazing with fury and she felt a heavy pain in her heart; what did she do that was so wrong?

"You do not belive in me!" the unicorn screamed, yet the voice was not heard with her ears. It was drilled into her brain and felt like a hot iron. "You do not belive I am real, even when I stand before you!"

She could not reply, her gulit washing over her heavily. "I've never.. I've never seen.. a ... a... a unicorn before.."

"You see me now, and you refuse to belive it!"

"How do I know I am not dreaming?"

It's eyes blazed even more, it's nostrils flaring. It reared up and trumpeted. "You doubt what you see with your own eyes?!"

She couldn't say anything. Her throat was in a knot, her heart pounding.

"You sought me out, and you doubt your findings." the unicorn said, it's voice still heavy with fury.

"I sought you out because I knew no other way to help my friend."

"You sought me for your own selfish reasons, and even doubt my existence?!" It trumpted again. "I give you serenity while you rest, and your payment is to doubt my being?! I come to you to ease your pain yet you do not belive I am real? How could you?!"

"I am sorry.." She didn't know what to say. What do you say to a unicorn? She hung her head in shame as she felt the unicorns angry voice still screaming in her mind.

"Your pain is undenyable." The unicorn replied softly. "You braved my forest in search of my magic. You came to save your friend from the same fate as your father."

Her face was contorted with differnt emotions. How..?

"I can not heal the unbeliving. Your friend did not come; and for that I can not help."

"She was to weak to come! You must go to her, she'll die if you don't!"

The unicorn's eyes glazed with sadness. "Don't you think I know that?"

"But.."

"She has to call my name. That's all it takes, Alexia. She has to call my name."

"How do you know my name?!"

"That is irrelevant."

"What is your name then? Tell me your name so that she may call it."

The unicorn shook its head. "Even I do not know my name." And with that it began to walk away.

"Where are you going?!"

The unicorn did not reply. It walked into the trees and did not turn back. Despite her glowing fur, she could be seen in the dense forest. And Alexia fell to her knees and cried. She stayed there, and cried all day. She slept the night, yet she did not grow hungry. In the morning she turned to go. Her eyes knew not the way, she let her heart guide her. And she reached the edges of the forest.

Her heart lept for joy, and at the same time cried because her quest had ended. She had found the unicorn, but she could not heal Vanessa. She turned back to the forest, and there stood the unicorn. There it stood in all it's glory.

"My name is a fragment on the wind; murmmerd by butterflies and sung by the birds."

Alexia stared at her, wondering what it could possibly be.

"It is not known to man, because man is to involved in it's science. If you listen with your heart, you will understand." It stood there, shining brightly, as if waiting, beckoning for an answer. "I am the magic of this world, without me it would die. Call my name."

She closed her eyes, and forgot her world. Forgot her pain and listend to the unicorn's words. And the name came. The name no human had ever had the nerve to say, it's wonder to great to come from the lips of man. She opened her eyes, looked at the unicorn, and called her name.
