Upon your instructor's
command, "Leave you Dog", give your dog's name and the command "Stay"
while passing the palm of your right hand in from of your dogs face.
"Leave your dog" is used in the long sit, long down, and recall exercises.
Give your dog's name and the command
"Stay" while bringing your right hand in front of the dog's face.
Step directly in front of your dog
leading with your right foot. Using the left foot might signal
your dog to move. If your dog moves, quickly put your dog back in a
sit position, tell the dog to "Stay", and move away from your dog, again.
After several practices, move farther and farther away until you are at
the end of your leash.
The stay, sit, and down are combined in
the long sit and long down exercises.
During the long sit exercise, the
instructor will ask you to "Sit you dog". Make sure your dog is
sitting comfortably. When you finish, the instructor will ask you to
"Leave your dog". Step out on your right foot and walk to the end of
the leash. Turn and face your dog. Do not back away from your
dog. Make the leash just touch the ground, don't hold it taunt.
Stand at a relaxed attention with good posture. Stand still, any
extra motion could signal your dog to break the stay. Pay attention
to you dog, but do not stare at your dog. Looking over the top of
your dog's head, or just between the ears is a good focal point.
When the instructor says "Return to your dog", walk toward your dog, past
his left side (to your right), and and around his backside into Heeling
Position. Your dog should not move, but continue to stay while you
are returning. When the instructor says "Exercise complete", praise
your dog.
The long down follows the same pattern
with the exception the instructor will ask you to "Down your dog".
When you return to your down, make sure your dog stays down until the
instructor says "Exercise complete".
