CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Rod Smith

We are very pleased to have the beautiful building we call the Veterans Center. It sits in a park maintained by the County Park & Recreation Service. Much of the inside upkeep is a job we undertake. It is necessary to have a showplace facility so that we meet proudly, and are able to easily rent our building to citizens. The problem that exists relates to ongoing upkeep. Parks & Recreation has had continuing cuts in maintenance funding. We have assisted in providing the cash necessary to purchase new air conditioning units (more are needed), and in painting and sprucing up our home. The Executive Board is instituting a program wherein members and supporters can donate $25 per year, if they wish, toward funds necessary for keeping our building nice inside and outside. The boardwalk needs some replacement wood. Some nameplates have been damaged. There are spots of water damage. A new ceiling could be used in several rooms. When we erect new housing for the museum, there are many safeguards we could purchase to protect those items we display, whether owned by or loaned to our facility. Chairs and tables are replenished regularly. Then we have TV's, VCR's and video's, plus the many new things we will want for our expanded museum. Think about helping, if able!

VETERAN SERVICE OFFICE REPORT

V.A. HEALTH CARE ENROLLMENT: THE REAL TRUTH!
Recently, a rah of E-Mail and other forms of communication have sent a message basically saying that if you don't enroll in the V.A. Healthcare System by 1 October 1998, that you will lose your V.A. healthcare benefits for life. It ain't true! Every veteran is encouraged to enroll in the V.A. healthcare system as this is the primary way the V.A. determines how to more fairly distribute health care budget dollars.

Last year Florid received $54 million in additional budget dollars and expects to receive about the same extra distribution again this year. So, enrollment is vital. If you have received V.A. healthcare services here after 1 October 1996, you do not need to enroll. The V.A. will process an application on your behalf and notify you in writing. You will remain enrolled for one year. Your enrollment will be reviewed each year. If you have been getting healthcare from he V.A. during the year, they will renew your enrollment and notify you in writing. If you have not received healthcare for a year after enrollment, you will need to take action to enroll again. The bottom line is that you can enroll for V.A. healthcare at any time even after 1 October 1998.

NEW BREVARD V.A. CLINIC
The V.A. has set up two trailers for construction offices at the site. Serious construction work is slated to begin in 4 to 5 weeks. First work will be leveling the site. Plans are still on track to treat the first veteran in April 1999.

The ground breaking ceremony was completed on 20 March 1998. The new 120 bed state of the art nursing home is scheduled to open for business in the April/May 1999 time frame. It will be located adjacent to the Orlando V.A. Clinic.

NEW FLORIDA VETERANS NURSING HOME
The second 120 bed State Veterans Nursing Home is Land O' Lakes is under active construction. They plan to open in December of this year.

IN MEMORIAM

It is with deep regret we must inform you of the passing of Wilma Wood. She died March 18th at home. Wilma was one of the Trustees for the Veterans Memorial Center and a very special lady. She was a great supporter of the Brevard Veterans Council and believed in working together. Several spoke of some of the many wonderful things she has done at her funeral service held in Cocoa Beach. A quiet service was also held in her honor at the Veterans Memorial Center on March 27th. At that time her attorney announced she left the Center $10,000 in her will. We mourn her passing. She was truly a wonderful lady that will be greatly missed.

JERRY O'BRIEN V.A. MEMORIAL FUND

The Veterans Memorial Center has set up a fund for the new V.A. Clinic to purchase needed items. The fund got a big boost the past few weeks thanks to Maj. Richard Howe, an active duty member of the national Sojourners. Maj. Howe offered to provide a $100 matching donation to go along with the National Sojourners donation of $250. He also agreed to donate $100 to match other organizations donations of $250 or more up to a total of eight (8). Four other organizations have donated $250 since: MOWW, Reserved Officers Association, DAV 123 of Merritt Island, and DAV 135 of Palm Bay. Special thanks to Maj. Howe and the organizations. Three more can still take advantage of this most commendable offer.

PLEASE NOTE

  • The Council & Center have sent several letters out concerning the effort to name the new V.A. Clinic after Jerry O'Brien. Dr. Roswell responded, noting that V.A. facilities are usually named after the area were they are located. To name it after someone would take an Act of Congress or the President. Letters are encouraged.

  • Stand Down Brevard will be held April 18th at the National Guard Armory on N.Fiske Boulevard, from 8:00 AM till 4:00 PM. Volunteers are needed at 8:30 AM on Friday to help set-up and starting at 7:30 AM on the day of the event.

  • Only 8 have signed up to go the trip to the Bahamas so far. This is really a nice affordable package if you have never been. For reservations call 1-800-545-1300 or for information call Rod Smith at 632-6702.

  • The fees have dropped to $30 for members and $40 for non-members (of Manatee Cove) for the Golf Tournament sponsored by the Center on May 9th. Lots of prizes! Hole sponsors are needed for $25, $50, $100 or $500 (see flier).

  • A special thanks to Officer Jamie Lythle of the Brevard County Sheriff's Department on her excellent presentation on current scams and how to avoid them. Special thanks also to Dana Absher on her informative presentation on Osteoporosis. Thanks also to the Space Coast Unit of WAVES National on getting all the towels and sheets donated for the Veterans Transitional Facility for Homeless Veterans.

APRIL SPOTLIGHT

Ada Maria Overlin

Maria was born in Verona, Italy, raised in Metz, France, graduating from High School there, then in Italy for Nurse Assistant. She came to the United States after her marriage in 1957. She lived in Florida for 42 years where her husband, Technical Sergeant Jim Overlin, who was a Radio Operator in a Communications Group of the signal Corps, settled and operated his own Printing Shop. She worked as his helper for 30 years and has seen Brevard County grow greatly since then. Her husband passed away in 1990, since then she has retired and dedicated herself to many organizations as a volunteer. She enjoys what she does and feels it is a great reward in helping others. Her favorite place to work is the Veterans Memorial Center.

A big Thanks to Maria for all her long hours working at the Center, helping us keep the doors open and assisting veterans. We couldn't do it without you Maria.

MAY SPOTLIGHT

Jeannette Jackson

Jeannette was born in Quebec City, Canada, and was educated by the Catholic nuns. As she loved to travel, she chose the tourist industry as her line of work since it was an economical way to travel. But first she had to learn English the hard way. Otherwise she couldn't work. Since French was "de riguer" in Quebec, and from what we've read in the paper, it is still the same.

She met Sgt. Jackson in Bermuda and in 1952, she married MSgt. H. M. Jackson in Panama City, Florida. He served 22 years in the U. S. Air Force. He passed away in 1996. They were married for 44 years; she and their children miss him very much. Jeannette has 3 children, and 2 grandchildren. Her daughter lives in Orlando and she is graduating from UCF with a Masters Degree. Her youngest son lives in Las Vegas; he is married and is a Master Electrician. She goes out there once in a while for a week. Her oldest son lives with her and is going to BCC in May to further his knowledge of computers and engineering.

Hobbies are painting, reading, stained glass and attending concerts. She does light water aerobics 3 times a week at the Nautilus. She has lived in Merritt Island for 14 years. Jeannette state, "she enjoys the people the works with and she is amazed by their dedication to help others."

Jeannette is another dedicated volunteer at the Center. She is the Manager on Duty on Wednesday mornings. Thanks Jeannette for all your hard work.
