There are several distinct branches of the Christian family which date from the second generation of children on Pitcairn: three branches, the descendants of Friday Christian (1790-1831) married Mataohu'Teraura', 'Susannah', 1775-1850 (the last living survivor of the Tahitian women):

(1) Charles Christian 'Big Charlie' 1808-1831 married Maria Christian, 1815-1889. Extinct in the male line since the 1940s via Driver Christian but represented by the Menzies and Jackson families.

(2) Mary Christian 'Big Melly' 1811-1852 and John Buffett, 1797-1891. Two sub-branches represented by Benjamin Claudius Christian and Ephraim Christian.

(3) Thursday October Christian 'Doctor', 'Doodie' 1820-1911 married Mary Polly Young 'Jackanailly', 'Mummy'1825-1885. This is the great branch on Pitcairn Island.

Three branches, the descendants of Charles Christian 'Hopa' 1792-1842 married Sully (Sarah), the daughter of Teio and William McCoy according to the Pitcairn Register, 1789-1826. The Nobbs family belongs to this branch:

(4) Fletcher Christian 1812-1852 married Peggy Christian, 1815-1884. Now only represented through the Jacob Christian 1833-1877 married Maria Quintal 1838-1900 and his son Holder Christian (senior) 1873-1940s? married Mary Quintal 1876-.

(5) Charles 'Little Charlie', 'Fat' 1818-1886 married Charlotte Quintal, 1822-1883. The Bailey family belongs to this group. This branch has two important and distinct sub-branches through Charles Allen Cristian 1855-1910 married Nora Leonora Nobbs (1860s-1940s) 'the Allen Christians' and Reuben Elias Christian 'Pa Reuben' 1860-1940s? married Anna Wallen (a Bailey relative from Otahuhu NZ) ca1870-1940s?

(6) Isaac Christian 1825-1877 Mirriam Young 'Mileyam' 1829-1911.

NOTE: 'Little' indicates 'the younger', as 'Big' indicates 'the elder' in terms of age.

The (junior) Fletcher Christians

John Stephen Christian 1843-1918, son of Fletcher jun., married Ellen Quintal 1837-1910. This sub-branch is extinct unless son William Swain Christian (b 1870) has descendants away from Norfolk. His aunt Sarah Christian 'Big Salah' 1810-1899 married George Hunn Nobbs, the founder of the Nobbs family

Stephen John 'Nig' Christian 1916-1983 son of Cornelius Stephen Christian 1894-1972 (and Rita Taylor), son of Holder Brownell Christian 1873-, son of Jacob Christian 1833-1877 (the brother of John Stephen Christian (pictured above).

The Charles Christians ('Little Charlie') Children and grandchildren

Matthew Frederick Howard Christian 1859-? son of Charlie Christian and Charlotte Quintal. Howard married Dinah Amabella Quintal 'Aunt Amy' 1859-1940s? He and Aunt Amy founded one of the first general stores on Norfolk Island, known as the 'Clothing Club'.

Charles Allen Christian 1855-1910 (left)brother

of Howard Christian (above). Allen married Norah Leonora Nobbs (right), the daughter of James Wingate Johnston Nobbs 1839-1909 and Isabella Emily Christian 1839-1895 (the daughter of Fletcher Christian (jun) and Peggy nee Christian). Their son Frank Bell Christian (standing) born 1886 married teacher Jessie Wentworth Scott of Moree.

Another son, Charles Gorton Christian born 1880, married Christabel Christian born 1883 married Christabel Christian, daughter of Leonard Elliot Wood Christian and Mary Ellen Olivia Buffett. Most descendants now live in NewZealand and Australia.

Mary Nora Christian 'Maymie' born 1892, a daughter of the above. Married William Harold 'Mancy' Edwards born 1904son of Ezra William Edwards and Anne Adams 1873-1926 (daughter of Josiah Adams and Diana (Dinah) Mc Coy).
