Kya Misra Hai ?!
In simple words, "Kya Misra Hai" is an informal and friednly quiz,
in which you have to complete the sher. One line is given to you
from a famous sher, and the second line you have to come up with
on your own ! Note that, you DO NOT have to figure out the original
sher. You have to construct a new Misra ie. a line using your
creativity.

The idea of such a quiz is due to
Irfan Moinuddin
who mentioned his idea around 94-95 to me in an eMail. When I found
an example of a professional poets doing this, I thought, why not
put this quiz on the Web. So I have just formalized some intial rules,
added disclaimers etc. and uploaded here.
The idea of putting on the Web in such a way is
due to
Samiuddin Mohammed
who posted the "Tasveer aur Tassavur" quiz on
his page.

Some Information
Current Quiz
This is the first quiz. And IMO it should begin with a sher by GHalib !
So here is a line from GHalib ...
...
hotaa hai shab-o-roz tamaashaa mere aage !
...
Start thinking ! Add YOUR line before or after the given line !
And mail in your ideas to
avachat@hotmail.com (Abhay Avachat). You can send in as many
ideas as you want. Remember, the resulting sher can be good, ok, serious,
light .. anything !
And of course, your comments and suggestions are most welcome !
Original sher
This is a very famous sher by GHalib, also the "matla" of a famous
GHazal by him. The GHazal has been rendered nicely by Jagjit Singh.
baazeechaa-e-atfaal hai, duniyaa mere aage
hotaa hai, shab-o-roz tamaashaa mere aage
[baazeechaa-e-atfaal = bachchoN ka khel]
[shab-o-roz = day and night (ie. all the time)]
I believe, the line taken for this quiz can be used in variety of conetxts,
and hence may spark the creativity in you :-) Hope you enjoy this little
excercise to your gray cells.
Deadline for this quiz is September 30, 1997

Rules of this quiz
- You have to think of a line of your own to add to the given line.
- Your line can fit before or after the given line.
- It's not necessary for your line to be of the same metre of the original
line. If it is then GREAT, if it's not, don't worry. We are just having fun.
- It's not necessary that your line rhymes with the given line. We are trying
to construct any sher, not a "Matla" (first sher of a GHazal).
- MOST IMPORTANT - There are NO winners ! I am NOT going
to judge which entry is better or best. Remember, this is just fun.
- You can submit as many ideas as you wish.
- After the deadline, all the replies will be collected together and posted
here.
An example
Some years ago, I actually read a poet using another poets famous line
in his sher. No, no, that was not plagiarism. It was very clear from the
usage, as the used line is extremely well-known. In fact, I thought it
was a clever usage. Suddenly Irafan's quia idea came to my mind. Such a
quiz does not fit in well with the charter of any newsgroup I know of.
(No, ALUP is not available to everyone). Hence I decided to post it on
my page. Here is the sher I am talking about ...
ye keh kar, dilbar dil ki nagar se chala gaya,
"lagata nahiN haiN dil mera ujade dayaar me"
The poet is Sikandar Ali 'Vajd'.
As you must have noticed the second line is from a very famous sher.
Do you know which ? And who is that poet ? Ok, ok. This is an example
and not a quiz. The original sher is by Bahadur Shaah 'Zafar', and goes like
lagata nahiN haiN dil mera ujade dayaar me
kis ki bani hai, aalam-e-naapaa'idaar me
As you can see, the new sher adds a line before the line from the old sher,
and also it doesn't rhyme. Hope this example makes the rules clear. If you
have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me.
Disclaimers
- Again something IMPORTANT. I am NOT going to judge whose
idea was better. Honestly, I do not have any authority to do so. But more
importantly, that's not the intention in the first place. The intention
is to have some creative fun. That's it.
- It's not the intention to make fun of any poet or belittle anyone. It's
also not intended to compare professional poetry with amature.
- Your answers will be collected together and posted here. If you wish to
remain anomymous, please mention so with your entry.
- If you have any comments, suggestions, criticisms, please send them in.
- Sorry for so many disclaimers, but I don't like lawsuites ... :-)))
