Symptoms at various times:
• before intolerance of gluten made itself known:
- muscular discomfort on exertion
- a readiness to transpire under the arms
- lack of morale, if not susceptibility to depression
- shortness of temper (apparently common in the presence of food allergy of any sort)
- a general puffiness in the skin
In short, nothing to arouse suspicion - but a set of symptoms which now recurs only after ingesting gluten.
• once intolerance of gluten declared itself:
- enormous appetite - particularly at the start
- recurrence of the symptoms above after ingestion of gluten
- runny nose while eating (and during colds and ’flu, unless relieved by a drug called Zyrtec)
• after eight years of a gluten-free diet, all that remains is a susceptibility to gluten and a problem with temperature regulation and energy supplies.
I have to pay attention to the quantities I eat, the times I eat them, ambient temperatures and energy expenditure. Relatively slight departures from normal in any of those can have consequences which are noticeable.
If I accidentally ingest some gluten, though, most of the old symptoms reappear.
