The details of what I’m calling depression are fairly precise.  They include:

  • a low view of one’s capacities
  • a tendency to make few friends
  • a shortage of ambition and of expectation of success
  • a tendency to keep people at a distance, preferring formal to informal relationships
  • in the give and take of conversation, a tendency to step outside one's shoes - to observe, rather than participate in, the interacting
  • awareness and resentment of not having the resources other people enjoy express themselves, involuntarily, in the contributions one makes
Although, after some ten years on a gluten-free diet, these symptoms have mostly disappeared, they come back immediately after consuming gluten.  It’s this cycling on and off which renders them visible.
