Iolaos, Hercules' Charioteer

Iolaos, or Iolaus depending on the text, the son of Heracles' brother Iphicles and Automedusa, served as Heracles' charioteer. Some myths also say that Iolaos may have married Heracles' former wife, Megara. The myth says that after Heracles killed his children by Megara in a fit of madness, he passed her onto Iolaos so that he may protect her. He was the father of Leipephile and founder of Iolaea in Sardinia. Iolaos also assisted Hercules in his twelve labors, by helping him kill the Hydra. Iolaos burned the stumps of the Hydra's head as Heracles cut them off, so new heads couldn't grow.

Iolaos also joined the hunt for the Calydonian boar and was a chariot race winner at the Olympic Games. After the death of Heracles, Iolaos helped his children, the Heraclids, in their struggle to claim their kingdom. After Heracles was deified, he asked Hebe to restore Iolaos to his youthful form so he could kill Heracles' long time enemy Eurystheus.
