Shrinking Banshee Presents:
Charon, Ferryman of the River Styx
Charon was the
son of the primitive gods Erubus (Darkness) and Nyx (Night).
Charon was also the brother of Aether, Cer, Dreams, Hypnos,
Momus, Moros, Nemesis, Thantos and Hemera. In myth he serves
Hades by conveying the dead across the River Styx once the
funeral rites had been said and a silver or gold coin (obol) was
placed in the dead person's mouth to cover the ferryman's fee.
Those who did not receive a proper funeral were doomed to walk
the river banks for a hundred years before being able to cross
over to the underworld. Charon was once imprisoned for a year by
Hades for letting Heracles force him into giving him safe passage
to the underworld.
