The "Waterworld"

After the last great glaciation that covered the northern Europe between 65000 - 7000 B.C., most of Sweden was a "waterworld" in the Ancylus Lake period. The water was fresh with no salt and had no connection to Kattegatt (the Atlantic).

Julita (the red spot at map) was about 40 m (130 feet) below the sea level.

The yellow spots mark the positions of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmoe.

Littorina Sea

When there became a passage from the Ancylus to Kattegatt (through "Dana älv" - Big Belt), the sealevel dropped about 45 m and a early "baltic sea", with fresh water, was born - the Littorina Sea, about 7000 B.C.

At this time the Julita area became an archipelago with two of the biggest islands in the "Midsweden" area.

There are a lot of archeological findings in this region from that early period (called "Vrå-culture" because of the place where the most significant findings were done).
