Unit Management
I attended Unit management course on the 30th of July at Kanwal scout hall. The course leader was Robyne Plant. Sebastian and I attended. The course was fairly interesting considering the type of activities related to unit management are limited and all we did was listen to lectures.
I then for part 2 went to the Department of Fair Trading in Gosford and talked with the Manager Sean Lonergan. He gave me some photocopies and answered some questions that I had previously prepared. From our meeting I found that:
1. The aim and principles of The Dept. of Fair Trading is to make sure the market place is fair and at an equilibrium between the consumer and the trader (See attached Corporate Plan).
2. The Objectives of the Dept. of Fair Trading is the make sure that the corporate aims are met as quickly as possible.
3. The structure of The Dept. of Fair Trading is layed out on the following two hierarchal structure charts.
4. The funding for the dept. is broken down into two areas: 1) Self funding, which comes from their charges to the traders for such things as certifications and licensing and 2) From state treasury funding.
5. There is no real election or appointment procedure currently in place. When a position becomes available the applicants are interviewed and the right person for the job is chosen based on merit, experience and knowledge of what their new job will require.
At the Gosford office there are 12 staff. Sean the manager, the inspector and the rest are broken into 2 groups, reception and complaints, each having 5 staff. Sometimes there is somebody there who deals with Management tribunals.
