I want to take a moment to write about a Southern California GSD breeder that I have found and highly recommend. Lenga's Shepherds is owned and operated by Helene Kohen and is located in Gardner valley just South of
Idyllwild. After corresponding with and finally meeting Helene I knew we
were going to get a puppy from her. In March we drove up to her
wonderful home in the mountains and picked up or newest member of our
family, a little boy who we named Ryker (Lenga's Von Ryker del Sol).
Helene was kind enough to send us home with a few of his favorite toys
and food to help him transition to his new family and home.
All of our dealings with Helene have been exceptional. She has responded
to all of our requests and questions without pause or question and
really made us feel like she cared not only for her dogs but also for
us. Helene continues to keep in contact to make sure everyone is healthy
and happy. All of Helene's dogs are a joy to be around. We have two
children, son is 5 and daughter is 3, and the dogs were positively
gentle and friendly with them from the moment we arrived. My wife, who
never let our kids near strange dogs, was won over inside 15 minutes and
let the kids walk and play with Duke, Oreka, and Cypress. Now THAT'S
SAYING SOMETHING!
For all the work and dedication that Helene has shown us, and obviously
her dogs, we feel she deserves a heart felt letter of recommendation.
Helene, if you are reading this, Edie and I want to thank you very much.

I would like to express my delight in the relationship I have had with Helene, from Lenga's German Shepherd since I bought my female puppy from her 2 years ago.
Helene is an absolutely wonderful person. I adopted my Khayla 2 years ago. She is beautiful, very sweet, affectionate and just has an all around great temperament.
I have a son who is eight years old, and Khayla absolutely adores him. I live in Missouri and had Khayla flown in to St. Louis when she was eight weeks old. When little Khayla arrived she was almost completely potty trained, walked on a leash, and knew how to come to her name, and sit.
I did a lot of research into German Shepherd breeders, and I would highly recommend Helene dogs. They are of the highest quality and beauty. I could have gotten a puppy closer, but I can say with confidence that none compared to one of Helene's puppies. People stop me all the time and comment on how beautiful Khayla is and how well behaved she is.
Helene has been so helpful and always available to my many questions. I can always count on getting a response on the day I write her. I think if you get a puppy from Helene you will be very happy.

Dear Helene, Please use this letter as reference. It was about 15 years ago that we first got our beautiful male German Shepherd from you. When he died of old age, our first thought was, "Lets go back to Helene, and get another one just like him" Well, we put down a deposit for a male puppy, and within a few weeks Helene called us, saying she has an adult female for us, that would be perfect for us. Well, when Helene changes the sex and age of what we wanted, this female must be very special, so we gave her a try.
Oh my God, never did I dream that a Shepherd could be this perfect. Within a few days, we knew she was the one for us. She fitted our live style perfectly. Helene came over one time to give her a training lesson of where to do her business, and she picked it up right away. She is so good that she has the freedom of our whole house, with the doggy door open all the time. When we come home, everything is in it's place, and nothing has been disturbed. So when Helene tells you she has another puppy or dog for you that is perfect for your, believe her, and trust her, as she really cares that each new owner should be completely happy and satisfied with their new puppy or dog.
We highly recommend any of Helene's dogs or puppies to anyone that wants a top quality personality puppy.

Dear Helene,
First let me just say what a genuine pleasure it has and will continue to be in the Wonderful World of German Shepherds, largely due to our close association with Helene Kohen. At this time I would like to make it clear to everyone, this letter of recommendation comes from the Heart as well as the mind. Some years back, my wife and I had lost our beloved companion, "Sniper" a large wonderful German Shepherd. He was from Germany. He was fierce, loyal, intelligent and a great all around family dog. I figured when he passed on , we would never see the combination of those attributes again. This is however, until (our great fortune) my chance meeting with Helene. I was looking for another German Shepherd at the time. This was some what to my suprise as well as Very Good Fortune again. I explained to Helene about the loss of our dog, which had now been over a year and a half. She was very understanding and explained why there were no puppies available at that particular time. Although she had puppies, they were all spoken for already! She proceeded to inform me of "Several" things pertaining to Shepherds, I had never considered. This is when I decided to wait for an opportunity to purchase one of her dogs, rather than just buy any Shepherd! Well, now I have 2 wonderful Shepherds from Helene.
I can't begin to put into words how Helene has not only furnished one perfect Shepherd for me, but two. Our wonderful trained adult female, called Cypress, and later, our new puppy, Thor. She has been there every step of the way, literally. Her love and devotion to matching her Shepherds with people, is a real gift! She has knowledge, experience, patience and understanding and provides each family purchasing the dog or puppy, a "Complete Package", and I do mean "Complete"! Try and find that somewhere else! Now it was a few months after I had met Helene when she came up with a Marvelous plan to fix me up with her own personal Shepherds, I might add!
If there was ever a more perfect reincarnation of Sniper, it was in her Cypress. She knew it, and felt it, after I had told her all about our Sniper.
She has such a good heart! Cypress was so well trained, too, and Helene is an excellent trainer as well. I see similar traits in our new puppy, too, called Thor.(Later:) Never would I have guess it.......Thor has turned out to be one of the best Shepherds I could ever imagine! Cypress and Thor are everything we always wanted in our Shepherds, and we are so HAPPY with Them. I rarely recommend anything to anyone, but in my book, Helene Kohen is the BEST Breeder you could ever hope to find!

Dear Helene,
This letter is well deserved, and I'm proud to be writing it. This is in regard to a German Shepherd puppy, that I call, "Hermie", that I got from Helene, from Lenga's German Shepherds.
I told Helene that I wasn't that experienced with puppies, and needed a perfect puppy that would teach himself pretty much everything he needed to know, and that I wanted a puppy that was not destructive, and was very intelligent, and would pick up things easily, and just an all around great dog with the kids, that would be trained and socialized already.
I did not think this would be possible, but I was hoping, wishing and praying somehow Helene would pick out such a puppy for us. My expectations were met to my every detail. I was amazed and astonished at how well behaved our Hermie was when we brought him home. Helene spend so much time with me, going over step by step how to raise him, and how to keep up the words that he already knew. He was the most wonderful dog I have ever owned. Not just in great looks, but the most amazing personality you can imagine!
If you want an exceptional German Shepherd puppy, I recommend Helene very highly. She keeps her promises, and is always there for you if you need any help. You cannot go wrong if you get a puppy from Helene.

I want the world to know that Dreams do Come True with your help. In late 2000 early 2001 I was searching for a German Shepherd to add to my household. Didn't want full German or American but a mixture of both. In my search I came across Lenga's Shepherds and started conversing with Helene. She was great; answered any questions I had, sent me pictures of any breedings that were planned, and once I picked the parents, a year later, sent me loads of pictures of the puppies. She asked me about the type of dog I was looking for so she could pick the right one for me. The funny part is we both picked the same dog at I think 3 weeks. I drove all the way out to California in Dec. 2001 from Colorado to get my Shatzy Dreams Come True. 18 hours of driving that were the most worthwhile drive of my life. Driving back with Shatzy, she was perfect. She layed in her crate so she was safe, went potty outside whenever we stopped, sat and came to her name. All this from a 7 week old pup. Her personality was just as I wanted. She loves living in the country with horses, other dogs, cats, and even turkeys. When my grandson was born she just adopted him and is never to rough. I wanted to show her but she got a cactus needle stuck in her paw that got infected. She has still a mild limp but the Vet said it might yet go away in the next few month. She is so beautiful and perfect. I hope to get another dog from Helene in the future. She takes pride in her dogs and it shows in their offspring. I would recommend her dogs to anyone who want a perfect companion. I also know that even after a year I can still ask questions and get the right answers. I hope to know this wonderful breeder for the rest of my life. My deepest thanks to this wonderful women. Thank you Helene.

Dear Helene,
It is so hard to believe that Gilbert has only been with me for less then three weeks now. I could not imagine life without him.
He is getting along great with my three young children. He is also now "buddies" with Gretchen. At first, they did get along but weren't really interested in each other much,but not now. They are always together now. They eat, play, and sleep next to each other.
As you know, when Gilbert first arrived he was quite rough with my cats. I was not sure if he would ever be able to live with them. Well, 2 weeks later, he even shares his dish with the cats!!! We have four cats and he gets along fine with them all. Also, I visited a friend who has a cat, and he was great with her cat too. ( Usually, even Gretchen who was raised with cats, will chase and nip at "strange" cats)
I no longer need to use a leash for Gilbert. He comes everytime he is called, and loves to have free run or our three acres to play with Gretchen. He very much wants to please. He is a great dog.
He follows me around the house all day. He has immediately bonded to me,as I have to him. I knew whenever I first saw him that he was meant to be mine. I was right. I have absolutely no complaints about Gilbert. He is a wonderful, gorgeous & smart dog.
Many people compliment me on his outstanding personality and how gorgeous he is. People who I don't even know were stopping me in the grocery store to ask about Gilbert since they had seen him patiently waiting in the car.
Well, I just wanted to reassure you that everything is wonderful with Gilbert. Everyone loves him here and he is a great addition to our family. I thank you again for giving me the opportunity to own such a magnificent dog!

Hello I would love to be a reference source for you. I have three other
shepherds here for a total of 5 now and NONE of them compare to your Sola's
self-confidence, obedience, tolerance and most of all for me, her complete
devotion.I would trust Sola in any situation at any time. She is the kindest
most gentelest shepherd I have ever been around and yet she has came to my
"rescue" twice. My husband has never seen Sola in protection mode and the
other day he did. Now, we know she has it in her, to protect, and would give
her life if need be. I trust her completely with the kids. She is so gentle and calm
around them. She is my favorite Shepherd.
Sola will be at the IABCA show in Vallejo the 25 and 26 of this month. I will let you
know how she does. In a few years I will be looking for a female for
breeding, showing and most of all I want her to be loving and I told my husband
I wanted to talk to you when the time comes. I have enough to work with right now with all of our
dogs, who sleep inside, so I just about have a dog in every room. We also have a
doxie and a bassethound that are just pets. Sola and another Shepherd that we have
named Star are the only ones that I plan to do breeding with. Sola is 5 years old now,
and will be resting this heat cycle. I could not believe the sells I have had with her
every time she has a litter of puppies. I received so many compliments on her
looks and temperment (IF I were you I would be very proud)I do not know if
you knew that in the 1 1/2 years that I have had Sola she has earned an
Hearding Tested, Pretrial Tested, and a Therapy dog certificate.She will be
handled in the IABCA show by my daughter's 10 year old friend.

Helene: BELOW IS RIGGS ALL GROWN UP.
Please accept this letter of appreciation and recommendation.
There aren't many things in life that are guaranteed, but I've been
fortunate to have two exceptional dogs to come into my life. My first was a
German Shepherd named Prince, and the second was a black, Labrador Retriever
named Cosmo. Both were above average in intelligence, loving, loyal and
remained devoted, until the day they passed away. Cosmo my husband's first
dog, so the grief was hard hitting. Even though the grief was hard on both
of us, we knew in our hearts, we had to have another pooch in our lives.
I must confess, I was torn between getting another German Shepherd, or
Labrador Retriever, but fate stepped in, and led my husband and I to Helene
Kohen. She runs a unique and exceptional breeder establishment, called
Lenga's German Shepherds. Because I wanted to make sure we would receive a
loving, gentle-majored, intelligent, and, of course, beautiful pup, I
decided to check out Lenga's German Shepherds. Upon arrival Helene's stud
dog, Duke, and dames Fisty, Oreka, & Cypress greeted my husband and me.
They were quite striking in color, and gentle to say the least. All had
great personalities, above average intelligence, and exception health. We
played with them for about ten minutes, almost forgetting that we hadn't
introduced ourselves as potential clients. Helene was use to this, and
said, she knew we would fall in love with her Shepherds.
When I met Duke, it was like deja vous. He reminded me of my dog Prince.
He was very loving, gentle, intelligent and handsome. My husband noticed
his large bone structure, but soon found himself bonding with him, and
playing around as if they had known each other for years. All of Helene's
German Shepherds are sweet-natured, gentle, loving, intelligent, and have
beautiful coats. After playing with Duke, Fisty, Oreka, and Cypress our
decision was made. We signed a contract immediately, and awaited the birth
of our special puppy. Riggs was born on June 10, 2002, and we brought him
home on August 2, 2002. He is very affectionate, and has a personality of a
Labrador, and the heart of a Shepherd. He was already potty trained him we
brought him home, and able to use the doggy door. He responds to his name,
understands sit, stay and no. He's a quick study, and our house is a home
again. Thanks and well-wishes will always be in our hearts for Helene, and
all future Lenga's German Shepherds.
Lastly, I said in the beginning that there aren't many things in life that
are guaranteed, but I think there may be one, and that is, the unconditional
love of a dog. Thanks to Helene, we are enjoying our new pooch Riggs. He
is everything we wanted and more. If you are interested in getting

Dear Helene, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Helene for helping me find what I believe is the best German Shepherd puppy one could ever hope for!
I researched breeders for two years prior to finding Helene, and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a puppy. Helene's love for her dogs is immediately apparent. The first time I spoke with her on the phone I was convinced that she was the right breeder for me. I waited 8 months for the right dog, and I put my faith in Helene to pick a puppy that I requested. Helene welcomed me into her home, introduced me to all of her dogs, and showed me her facilities for breeding the puppies. I had never seen such beautiful, confident, and friendly German Shepherds in my entire life!
What drew me to Helene was her emphasis on her dog's personality. I wanted a gentle dog, that would be confident and well behaved in any situation. I take Wylee with me EVERYWHERE, and people can't help but stop and comment on how beautiful and well behaved he is. Although he is only 4 months old, he knows all of his commands, waits by my side regardless of whether he is on the leash or not, and is always friendly and gentle with adults and small children alike.
When I brought Wylee home at 7 1/2 weeks, he already knew his name, how to walk on a leash, sit, use a doggy door, and relieve himself outside. Again, this is testimony to the love and attention Helene provides for all her dogs from the minute they are born. I have never experienced any behavioral problems with Wylee whatsoever. He patiently lays at my feet while I work throughout the day and is always up for a game of fetch with his Frisbee (his new favorite toy!), or a walk on the beach.
Because I work from home, I wanted a gentle companion to accompany me throughout the day. I also wanted a large dog, that I could take hiking, skiing, and camping. Wylee is 4 1/2 months old, he's already 65lbs, and he has accompanied me on many hikes and back country ski trips. He spends his days and nights in the house with me, and has never acted out or damaged any property. Every day I have people stop me to tell me that he is one of the most beautiful dogs they have ever seen, and I couldn't agree more.
Aside from providing me with all I ever wanted in a puppy, Helene is ALWAYS available to answer questions about her dogs. I continue to call her for advice, or just to say hello and tell her how her puppy is doing. Helene can provide a wealth of knowledge about raising a puppy, and I would encourage prospective buyers to trust her expertise. The art of raising a puppy is not always intuitive, and there is no substitute for the years of experience Helene has to offer.
