Main Concept: Students will analyze seasonal
experiences and poetry in a
confident and independent fashion. Seasonal experience
can include winter, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa,
Christmas, snow, etc.
Supporting concepts:
1. The student will write original poetry which is understandable
and
makes appropriate connections.
2. The student will demonstrate use of expressive vocabulary which
is
appropriate in developing a winter theme.
3. The student will evaluate and edit his/her poem using the writing
process to revise and proofread.
4. The student will express his/her reflections on a winter, seasonal
theme.
Objectives of this project:
1. To enhance the classroom English program.
2. To develop writing and technology skills.
3. To elaborate on a theme using a creative format.
4. To share original literature on the World Wide Web.
5. To meet or enhance the minimum requirements of the state of
Alabama Course of Study:
A. English #9: To begin to write in academic, social, and personal situations.
B. English #11: To use the writing process with guidance when
composing different
forms of written expressions.
C. English #14: To utilize the computer to gain confidence as a writer.
D. Social Studies #3: To apply reference skills in independent investigations of selected topics.
E. Reading #20: To read a variety of literature representative
of various cultures,
and ideas to develop an appreciation of their heritage and that of others.
F. Reading #25: To enrich expressions of language through engagement
with literary
works.
G. Science #8: To associate events with seasons.
Recommended age and number of participants:
This project is open to
classes of students in grades 1-3. The first eighteen
classroom correspondents will be included in the WWW project.
Registration Procedures and Requirements:
1. Entries must be postmarked by December 10, 1999. Original
student artwork to be enclosed with entries is encouraged.

follow-up activity. This successful enrichment exercise should
further develop the main concept of the project.
