The problems centered around King Friday XIII, one of Mr. Rogers's puppet creations who soon took on a mind of his own. "King Friday got it into that little paper mache head of his that he was responsible for the show's success, and he began making bigger and bigger demands. It really got out of hand." The feud culminated in an on-air spat in December of 1962. During a "Neighborhood of Make Believe" vignette, Friday began ad-libbing, making royal proclamations that, among other things, confiscated all property in Make Believe and declared him to be a deity. "When Friday called himself God, Fred really lost it," McFeely remembers. Rogers rushed on-camera (see photo inset), grabbed the King, and began beating the puppet's head against the trolley tracks, screaming "Blasphemer! Blasphemer!" Friday retaliated by banishing Mr. Rogers from his kingdom and, two days later, poisining the fish tank in Rogers's television home. "And when he killed the fish, that's when I think Fred cracked."
