New York Rangers 1997 Draft

The New York Rangers Select...

Stefan Cherneski in the first round, the 19th pick overall. Was named Scholastic Player of the Year in the Western Hockey League. Despite missing the final nine weeks of the season with an abdominal injury that consequently kept him out of the 1997 Top Prospects Game, he registered 39 goals (he led the team with 16 power-play goals) and 29 assists in 56 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Draft Cherneski
GM Neil Smith shows Stefan Cherneski what it means to wear Ranger blue.

He is noted as a deceptive skater with good puckhandling skills and is able to read and react in most situations while possessing an excellent shot with a quick release.
General Manager Neil Smith stated that the abdominal injury Cherneski sustained in February was not a major concern when it came time for the Rangers to make their selection. Team doctors felt the injury is not serious and either time or surgery will repair the injury. Smith regarded Cherneski highly, stating that 50 goals was not out of his reach in juniors and that Cherneski will most likely play at least two more years in juniors.
