So why do I like Evander?
In The Begining
This is a look at the career of Evander Holyfield as seen through my skewed eyes. When I first saw Evander, I was not a fan of his. So to
understand why I like him, we must go all the way
back to when I first became interested in boxing as a little boy.
I would say my first experiences with the sport of boxing came
from Hollywood. Rocky 3 was definitely the big fight movie of the
time and like most kids of the time, I loved it. The battles were
dramatic and when I watched real boxing for the first time, I was
confused. Why didn't the professional's punches sound like
Rocky's? Why couldn't they hit their opponent constantly like
Rocky did? Why didn't someone always get knocked out? Well, as I
soon came to realized the sport of boxing was far different from
the hit and no-defense style of Hollywood. I was disappointed.
There was no one in the professional world that could dominate
like Rocky did. I heard that in the past there were people that
did dominate. The names Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis and Rocky
Marciano kept coming up, but since videos weren't mainstream yet,
it was very difficult for me to see them in action. As a kid, I
really had no idea who they were. I waited for the day that
someone would rise to the level of Rocky Balboa.
