1990-91: Once again as the favorite,
Miami was upset. Entering
1990 with a senior quarterback, a more experienced coach and a defending
national championship, Miami was pre-season #1. BYU put a quick end to
that as Ty Detmer threw for over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns against the
vaunted Miami defense in a 28-21 upset at Provo. Craig Erickson was
equally brilliant but got little help from his receivers and the Miami
defense. Miami won a couple of games after that until Notre Dame got a
measure of revenge in Southbend. Despite over 300 yards passing by
Erickson, Notre Dame upset Miami 29-20. It was the last game in the
Miami-Notre Dame series. One which was thoroughly dominated by the Canes
until the end. Miami caught fire after the Notre Dame loss. They burried
Florida State 31-22 (pictured right) with the help of over 300 yards
rushing. The Canes
then destroyed #3 ranked Texas in the Cotton Bowl, 46-3. The media felt
that the Canes were the nation's best team at the end of the year, but a
10-2 mark was not worthy of a #1 ranking.
