NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
1991-92: The 1991 Miami Hurricanes
brought home Miami's 4th
National
Championship in a span of 9 years. The Canes were dominant from start to
finish. Led by new quarterback, Gino Torretta, Miami had wins of 40-10
over then #5 Houston, 26-20 over Penn State and a tremendous 17-16 victory
against #1 ranked Florida State in Tallahassee. In the Houston game,
Miami shut down Heisman hyped quarterback, David Klingler and Gino
Torretta threw for 4 touchdowns and over 350 yards.
Against Penn
State in the Orange Bowl, Miami used a 80 yard pass from Torretta to
Horace
Copeland, a 91 yard punt return by electrifying Kevin Williams and a 42 yard bomb from Torretta to Lamar Thomas to break open a halftime
tie with the Nittany Lions. In what was billed as the "Game of the
Century", #2, 9-0 Miami took on #1, 11-0 Florida State. Down 16-7 in the
fourth quarter, Torretta led Miami to 10 straight points and the
incredible
victory as FSU's field goal try sailed wide right in the closing moments.
In the Orange Bowl against a top ranked Nebraska team, Miami
could have named their score when they cremated the Huskers, 22-0 (pictured left). Miami
had over 450 yards of offense and held Nebraska to under 200. Miami was
awarded the National Championship for their second perfect season.
